We’ve reached the “early summer” portion of the “late spring/early summer” timeline that Bears President Kevin Warren provided for when a decision on the team’s stadium saga would be made. And while I don’t expect shovels in the ground being in our immediate future, Indiana’s governor sounds confident that the team will leave the Land of Lincoln for the Hoosier State.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun pushes back on JB Pritzker, his Illinois counterpart, who recently shared his belief that Indiana isn’t “a whole heck of a lot closer than we are” to getting a stadium deal done. To that end, Braun notes that there has been an offer from the Indiana side of the border since February. And this quote (via FOX-59/CBS-4) seems telling:
”When we ink it, that will mean that we are there. It has been just a constant discussion since they came to us six months ago. I made it clear that this has to be more than just a bargaining position to do something in Illinois.
”I told them, ‘You’re going to make a strong statement on that day before it comes through our legislature,’ which occurred. That was the first kind of seal on that handshake agreement.”
Handshake agreements can be dangerous. But a handshake agreement is more than what the Bears have with Illinois right now.

There was a part of me that was hoping that Illinois’ inability to come through with a last-second deal at the end of the spring legislative session would provide us a clear runway to Indiana finalizing a deal, if only so we could put this ordeal to bed. Instead, the Bears slow-playing this has opened the door for Illinois legislators to cobble together something that could entice the team to stay. The most recent update had Illinois trying to merge legislation from previous bills that were passed (seperately) in the House and Senate.
It is a bold strategy, to be sure. But one that could work. And if it doesn’t, then Indiana will be waiting with hat in hand for the Bears to take the next step in a move across state lines. In the end, I find myself wanting meaningful football activities to arrive so we have something fun to talk about. Because while a new Bears stadium is long overdue, this process has been tiring to follow — and I know fans who feel the same way.
