There was no practice today for the Bears, but we’ve still got some things to discuss this afternoon with a game on Saturday, some injury notes on Sunday, and a pair of signings this morning. So, before we turn our attention to tonight’s Sox-Cubs game, let’s get into some of the latest Bears news and notes.
We’ll start with today’s signings of DL Marcus Davenport and DB Deantre Prince. Davenport is the notable signing, providing the Bears with some rotational depth on the outside of the defensive line. Davenport is a former first-rounder, selected by the New Orleans Saints with the No. 14 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. There’s some experience with Dennis Allen from their time in New Orleans. Chicago becomes the third NFC North team to employ his services, with previous stops in Minnesota and Detroit. Davenport played eight games for the Lions last season and registered one sack and three quarterback hits, with the lone sack coming against Caleb Williams and the Bears in Week 2. After logging 10.5 sacks in his first two seasons with the Saints, he’s logged just four sacks in 29 games over the last four seasons. He will be 30 on September 4. There aren’t a ton of reasons to be excited here, but it’s a low-risk move for Chicago and adds another body to the mix to see how things play out through the remainder of camp and the preseason. Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Prince was a fifth-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, has played 10 NFL games (all in his rookie season), and has 8 tackles and a pass defensed to his credit. Prince ran a 4.38 40 coming out of Ole Miss, which fits the mold Chicago has tried to build within the secondary this offseason. Still, more than likely, projects as a depth piece toward the bottom end of the depth chart, giving Chicago another body for the remainder of camp and the preseason. Chicago waived running back Coleman Bennett and tight end Nikola Kalinic today as well. Speaking of the cornerback depth chart—Malik Muhammad played a bunch on Saturday against Cleveland and looked good. His zone coverage reps looked better than his man coverage, but he played with good instinct in zone and gets to the football well. A little Jordan Van Den Berg teaser. He’s showing what he’s been showing at camp. That he’s physical quick and relentless. Wasn’t a perfect game but you gotta be excited about this guys skill set on the DL. He’s gonna help the Bears this season. #DaBears #Bears #chicagoBears pic.twitter.com/pjHg9rE85L

Salvon Ahmed was another preseason standout from Saturday, totaling 72 yards, most of which came on his 49-yard touchdown—a second-and-4 screen pass from Case Keenum, where he took the pass deep in Chicago’s backfield, hit the left sideline and cut back inside before blowing by a group of Cleveland defenders. Roschon Johnson, whom Ahmed is battling for the final running back spot on the roster, rushed for 34 yards on eight carries (4.3), with his long on the afternoon a 19-yard run. Kyle Monangai has the No. 2 job locked up, but he left practice early on Sunday with an apparent knee injury. The Trib’s Brad Biggs said Monangai was able to leave the field on his own, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported later that Monangai’s knee is believed to be “fine,” with preliminary tests showing no structural damage. An MRI is scheduled for Monangai, and after the Coby Bryant mess, we’ll await official word from the team this week. Braxton Jones and Montez Sweat were also back on the practice field on Sunday. The return of Trapilo and Jones is good news because the film on Kiran Amegadgie and Jedrick Wills Jr. from Saturday was not promising. There’s still plenty to figure out with that spot over the next couple of weeks. These joint practices with Cincinnati and Tennessee will be worth monitoring.THE BN BEARS PODCAST LIVES HERE: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
