In theory, it's hard to imagine any movie relying on the chemistry of such wildly different actors as Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones.
With Carrey known for his off-the-walls manic energy and Jones frequently playing the soft-spoken, older curmudgeon, the two stars seemed something of an odd couple pairing ahead of 1995's Batman Forever.
Playing the antagonistic roles of the Riddler (Carrey) and Two-Face (Jones), both actors earned a less-than-favorable response from viewers upon the movie's debut, mainly due to the over-the-top performances both gave as their respective characters.
Interestingly, in addition to their inorganic chemistry on-camera, Carrey said that he and Jones proved less than cordial to one another off-camera as well.
During a 2017 guest appearance on Norm Macdonald Live, Carrey told the late Macdonald that Jones had a somewhat prickly attitude when it came to their interactions together.
Illustrating his point, Carrey recalled a time when, after a day of filming, he and Jones happened to find themselves at the same restaurant. When a surprised Carrey went over to say hi to Jones, the Truman Show star remembered Jones "shaking" in fury at the mere sight of his co-star.
"The maitre d' said, 'Oh, I hear you're working with Tommy Lee Jones. He's over in the corner having dinner,'" Carrey said. "I went over and I said, 'Hey Tommy, how are you doing?' and the blood just drained from his face. Like he had been thinking about me 24 hours a day."
"He got up shaking — he must have been in mid kill-me fantasy or something like that," the Mask actor continued. "And he went to hug me and he said, 'I hate you. I really don't like you.' And I said, 'What's the problem?' And pulled up a chair, which probably wasn't smart. And he said, 'I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'"
Elsewhere in the interview, Carrey speculated that Jones' animosity might have stemmed from the fact that Carrey had a more prominent role in Batman Forever than he did.
However, in spite of Jones' "hatred" of the actor, Carrey went on to say he didn't hold any bitter feelings toward the No Country for Old Men actor.
“I was the star and that was the problem,” Carrey speculated. “He’s a phenomenal actor, though. I still love him.”
