Iran and the United States have established a directcommunication channel to prevent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz fromescalating into a military confrontation, Iranian Press TV reported on Friday, citingsources.
Mediator included the channel in the final statementfollowing the June 22 talks in Switzerland to implement Article 5 of thememorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad. According to Press TV, Iranmaintains that all vessels transiting Hormuz must use the navigation routesannounced by the command authorities in Tehran.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that"safe passage through Hormuz cannot be guaranteed under ambiguousarrangements, parallel routes, or decision-making mechanisms that disregardIran's role as a littoral state."
