Erin Murphy Was Working a Very Different Job 10 Years After ‘Bewitched’

Erin Murphy spent most of her childhood as a working actress on the classic TV sitcomBewitched. The young star joined the cast of the magical ABC comedy series in 1966 when she was just two years old, playing mini witch Tabitha Stephens until the series ended in 1972.

But Murphy didn’t dive into multiple acting roles after Bewitched. She instead enjoyed being a kid and a normal teenager—and that included getting the obligatory teen job at the mall.

In a new post on Facebook, Murphy, now 62, shared a throwback photo from 1982, the year after she graduated high school. In the photo, she was dressed in a red blouse and white skirt as she posed on a carpeted stairway, preparing to head off to work. But “work” wasn’t an acting job for the then-18-year-old.

“Throwback Thursday! Heading to work at the May Company department store, 18 years old,” Murphy captioned the photo.

Fans had a big reaction in the comment section, with some telling the beloved sitcom star they never "expected” to see her working a regular job.

“Wow I am surprised you had to work a normal job. You basically look the same. Haven't aged a day,” one fan wrote.

“That's awesome, I would not have guessed that you had a ‘regular’ job..... I would've thought you would have had acting jobs....” another chimed in.

“It does my heart good to see that you grew up in such a relatively normal way and avoided the tragic traps that so many child stars fell victim to. Thank you so much for sharing!” a third commenter added.

In a previous post, Murphy revealed that she worked at the cosmetics counter at a department store in an Orange County, California, mall.

“Working at the makeup counter of the May Company Department Store at the Mission Viejo Mall,” she wrote in 2025. “Seems like yesterday AND a million years ago.”

After Bewitched, Murphy did normal childhood things like going to Girl Scout Camp—even as acting offers came in.

In an interview with Celebrity Drop, she recalled an offer to guest star on The Waltons. "I was at Girl Scout camp. And the call came in, and the decision was made that I wanted to stay at Girl Scout camp,” she shared.

"It was kind of great being a normal kid and being a cheerleader and all of those things," Murphy added of her teen years. "I like that I had both sides of that childhood.”

It’s unclear how long Murphy worked at the mall, but when she turned 21, she gained access to her invested earnings from the 103 episodes of Bewitched in which she appeared.

Speaking on The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan podcast earlier this year, she explained, “I got my money from Bewitched when I turned 21. …The way the laws were written back then, kid actors got something, it’s called a Coogan account, where a percentage of your money from a television show or movie is put into savings.”

“When I turned 21, I bought a house, bought a horse, lived on a little ranch, married, started having a family,” the former Bewitched star shared.
