The fifth season of The Bear has now been released on Disney+, picking up after Jeremy Allen White's Carmy announced his decision to quit the food industry and leave the titular restaurant to Ayo Edebiri's Sydney, Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Richie and Abby Elliott's Sugar.
The new season of eight episodes brings the acclaimed comedy-drama series to an end, with FX and Disney+ confirming it would be the show's final run back in May, after much speculation.
But why is this the end of The Bear, why won't there be a sixth season, and could the storyline or the characters continue on in some other form?
Read on for everything you need to know about why there won't be a season 6 of The Bear.
Why won't there be The Bear season 6?
It hasn't been explicitly confirmed why The Bear has finished up with its fifth season, but it certainly seems as though it was a creative decision from creator Christopher Storer.
Before the show was officially renewed for a fifth season, back in July 2024, FX Chairman John Landgraf told Variety that "we really don’t know" whether there will be a season 5, adding that "these decisions are really creative decisions" and "it’s really Chris [Storer’s] decision".
He continued: "It’s about, how much more story does he have to tell? I mean, obviously, I’m hoping he has more than one more season of story to tell. But not to the extent that if there was one great season or three mediocre ones, I’d rather have one great one. You just have to follow the creative."
Jeremy Allen White also recently told People that he felt the way the show ends with the season 5 finale "all makes sense".
"To me, this season, the end of the show is like — for Carmy [Carmen Berzatto] at least — is about this sort of like ultimate surrender and acceptance of, kind of like an honesty with himself," White said. "So that all makes sense to me."
He also added: "I think it got wrapped up in the perfect way."
Although the schedules of the high profile cast, which have only got busier and busier in recent years, may have been a practical incentive to wrap the show up, it seems it was primarily a creative decision not to continue on with a season 6.
Could there be The Bear spin-offs or could the series return in some form?
As of yet, there has been no mention of potential The Bear spin-offs or sequel series, so it seems unlikely.
Of course, things could still change over time. Ebraheim star Edwin Lee Gibson told Radio Times, ahead of season 5 airing that he believes "there's still more story there", and that "people will be asking for more" from his character.
"I do think audiences will be really, really happy and really, really clamouring for more of him," Gibson added.
He said that while on set for season 5, he was thinking: "'Wow, this is gonna probably be the last time we're together like this...' Unless you all are just banging at the walls of the castle, or like Oliver saying, 'Please can I have some more?'"
It therefore appears that Gibson believes any additional seasons of The Bear, spin-offs, or other follow-on series, will depend on fan appetite.
This isn't unreasonable – after all, we unexpectedly got a prequel episode earlier this year, Gary, which focused on Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Richie and Jon Bernthal's Mikey.
Perhaps more one-off episode or something further could be on the cards in future as well? We will have to wait and see, but for now at least, The Bear has closed its doors.
