Major changes are coming to the Chicago-area forecast as a fall storm system moves through Illinois this week, bringing periods of rain, storms, a sharp cooldown and even the threat of frost.
Wednesday will remain mostly dry, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, though a stray shower at times can’t be ruled out. Temperatures will be cooler, with highs in the mid 60s compared to a high of 80 degrees Tuesday.
“That’s the average high for this time of year,” NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Pete Sack said. “A more normal October day.”
The main weather event arrives Thursday.
“Here’s where we get into the real soaking rains,” Sack said, with up to an inch of rain possible.
About 9 a.m., showers will start creeping their way into Chicago from the south and west. Widespread rain is expected through noon, Sack said, with storms possible as the day goes on.
“Rumbles of thunder are not out of the question, especially in the southern suburbs,” Sack said.
Scattered showers are expected Thursday evening as a cold front passes through, Sack said. Friday morning is expected to be drier, though more stray showers could develop into the afternoon.
By Friday evening, temperatures will be in the mid-to-upper 50s, followed by frost chances overnight.
“Saturday morning, we could be looking at our first frost,” Sack said, with morning lows in the upper 30s, especially away from the lake.
Temperatures will remain in the 50s Saturday, bumping back into the 60s Sunday and up to the 70s by next week.
