World capitals, June 25 (SANA) Governments and international organizations voiced support for Venezuela on Thursday after two powerful earthquakes killed dozens of people, injured hundreds and caused widespread damage, while the United Nations called for urgent international assistance for affected communities.
International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope urged the international community to step up support for Venezuela, saying the U.N. agency is working with partners to assess humanitarian needs and deliver emergency assistance. She said rapid international support would be essential to relief and recovery efforts.
Saudi Arabia expressed condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Venezuela, while Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Deputy Emir Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani sent messages of condolence to acting President Delcy Rodríguez and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also extended condolences to the Venezuelan people, reaffirming Türkiye’s solidarity with the country, while the Lebanese and Jordanian foreign ministries issued statements expressing support for Venezuela and sympathy for those affected.
Earlier on Thursday, the United States said it was mobilizing humanitarian assistance for Venezuela and remained in contact with Venezuelan authorities following the disaster.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquakes measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. Venezuelan authorities said at least 32 people were killed and more than 700 injured, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.
