Alex Cooper has finally broken her silence on the several articles written about her Unwell Network and husband Matt Kaplan.
“I will say that building a startup, there is so much growth that comes with that, and I am extremely proud of what we have built at Unwell,” Cooper, 31, told Wall Street Journal editor Suzanne Vranica at Journal House in Cannes, France on Wednesday, June 24. “I will just kind of leave it at ‘don’t believe everything that you read on the internet’ — but I think everyone knows that at this point.”
Cooper noted that the company has done “a really incredible job” since it’s August 2023 launch.
“I think if you walk the halls, there are so many people that are so happy to work at this company,” Cooper added. “I think, unfortunately, being a woman in this industry is extremely difficult because you’re held to a completely different standard. Whether it’s a smear campaign being created for someone’s narrative, whatever it be.”
She continued, “I think when you read lies about yourself to fuel something else that is an obvious situation going on, it’s hard, but I think the reason that I’ve had success in this industry is I have really thick skin, and I’m going to keep pushing forward.”
Monica Schipper/Getty ImagesA Bloomberg article published in April alleged that Cooper’s husband “earned a reputation for frequently yelling at staff members.” Kaplan, 42 — who runs day-to-day operations at Unwell — allegedly “berated the staff” while the YouTube show Unwell Winter Games was filmed this past February.
The article further alleged that Kaplan “threatened to prevent them from ever working in Hollywood again if they messed up, resulting in a prominent, long-experienced crew member breaking down in tears.”
Alex Cooper and Matt Kaplan Stay Unbothered After Drama With Rare Outing
A second article, published by Vanity Fair earlier this month, claimed Kaplan is “wreaking havoc and making people cry” at Unwell. The story cited more than 40 sources, including former and current employees.
“I’ve heard him in the office be like to employees, ‘Who did you have sex with this weekend?’ ” a former employee alleged in the story. Another claimed they would “cry every day” at work.
Us Weekly reached out for comment at the time.
After the article’s publication, a source close to Cooper told Us that the Vanity Fair reporter had “a clear agenda” when crafting the story.
“She went to great lengths to get dirt for this story, but doesn’t include any mention of how many people spoke positively about Unwell, Matt and Alex,” the insider noted.
