It sounds like Zavion Thomas is making a good impression on Caleb Williams.
The Chicago Bears quarterback made an interesting observation (via Bears Wire) when talking about the rookie wide receiver during the team’s recent minicamp practices.
“When he came in from practice, he was frustrated at himself, and it’s important to still encourage him,” Williams said when discussing a learning moment for the rookie receiver. “When he’s out there making plays, when he’s got the ball in his hands and doing the right things, he’s pretty special. I’m really excited, if he can get the offense down and he can do his part, I think he’ll be really special for years on out.”
HOW WILL THE BEARS USE ZAVION THOMAS IN 2026?
I can see why Caleb Williams would be excited to throw balls to rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas. Even though Thomas is still dealing with the learning curve of his pro career’s maiden voyage, he is still “doing the right things” and leading his quarterback to express a positive sentiment. That might be a small thing, but I don’t think it is inconsequential. Not every quarterback speaks glowingly about young wide receivers who are in the learning phases of their respective careers. And not every young receiver has that dog in them to put in work to the point where you show visible frustration when you don’t do something to the best of your ability.
Hence, I find it notable that Williams goes out of his way to drop some praise on the rookie. It is also noteworthy that QB1 takes it upon himself to show signs of encouragement. Positive reinforcement can work as a useful developmental tool when it comes from the right people. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come.

There is no denying that the Zavion Thomas pick raised some eyebrows when it was announced.
Sure, the Chicago Bears needed help at wide receiver. And the third round seemed like a sensible spot to select a wideout. But Thomas wasn’t really on anyone’s radar as a Bears fit, which helps explain why many folks were surprised when he was the pick. Hit the fast-forward button from April to June, and now I’m starting to see what the front office saw in the LSU prospect.
Perhaps more important than that is that Thomas is building a connection with his starting quarterback. Hopefully, it is the kind of bond that pays off during the receiver’s rookie campaign.

ESPN’s recent projections dump (which colleague Patrick Flowers discusses here) forecasts Thomas to be a little-used piece of the offense, snagging only seven targets, making just five catches, and accumulating a mere 38 yards. With that being said, Thomas can play his way into a bigger piece of the pie during training camp and the preseason.
This isn’t to say that he will be supplanting one of the Bears’ top dogs at wide receiver. But I can see the team use him in creative ways that get him the ball in space. After all, do we really think Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is going to let a speed demon rot on the bench? I certainly don’t think so, and I definitely don’t believe that would be the case if he exhibits good practice habits when training camp opens and carries that momentum into the preseason.
If all else fails, Thomas’ profile makes me believe that he could be a quality contributor as a kick returner. In a way, that would make him an extension of the offense. At a minimum, displaying excellence on special teams is the type of thing that will open doors to getting some extra snaps on offense.
