Max Verstappen is heading into Red Bull’s home Grand Prix with a sense of anticipation and optimism, as the reigning world champion prepares to get his first taste of a significant new upgrade package at the Austrian Grand Prix.
After a frustrating weekend in Barcelona where balance issues prevented him from fully challenging at the front, Verstappen arrives at the Red Bull Ring hoping the latest developments on the RB22 can help unlock the performance Red Bull has been searching for.
The timing could hardly be better.
With thousands of passionate fans set to fill the grandstands at Spielberg and Red Bull racing on home soil, the Austrian Grand Prix provides the perfect stage for the team to evaluate its newest package and potentially reignite its charge up the order.
Home comforts and high expectations
The Red Bull Ring has long been one of Verstappen’s happiest hunting grounds, delivering memorable victories and unforgettable scenes from the sea of orange-clad supporters that flock to the circuit each year.
Unsurprisingly, the Dutchman is excited to be back.
"Austria is of course a home Grand Prix for the Team," Verstappen said. "It's been a great track for me in the past, and we have had really good memories there."
But while nostalgia is nice, Verstappen knows success this weekend will depend on getting the RB22 into its sweet spot around one of Formula 1’s most technically demanding layouts.
"It's a very interesting track, and all of the corners are quite different, so it's really important to get a good balance out of the car,” he added.
“You need both high-speed and low-speed performance, good traction, and now, with how energy-sensitive some tracks are, it is important to work to get on top of this."
That challenge was particularly evident in Spain, where Verstappen never appeared fully comfortable with the car and was left fighting for the best result possible rather than victory.
Now, however, attention is firmly focused on the fresh hardware arriving in Austria.
"We have a new package we are bringing, so it is exciting to see how much this could look to give us in lap time. We are looking forward to see what we can do at the Red Bull Ring,” Verstappen concluded.
Hadjar ready for Austrian homecoming
The excitement with Red Bull isn't limited to Verstappen. Isack Hadjar is also eagerly awaiting the weekend, with the Frenchman set to experience the unique atmosphere of Red Bull's home race for the first time as a Red Bull Racing driver.
"Austria is a weekend I've been looking forward to for a while. It's our home race, and it'll be the first time that I get to experience an atmosphere like it driving for this team, so it's definitely an exciting one to head into."
Hadjar arrives in Spielberg encouraged by his recent form. Despite a difficult opening lap in Barcelona that dropped him out of contention, he fought back impressively to secure sixth place and left Spain feeling positive about the team's trajectory.
"Barcelona was a good indication of the progress we have made, and even though we had a setback with the start, I managed to extract some good pace from the car and put in a strong recovery drive,” he added.
Like Verstappen, Hadjar knows the spotlight this weekend will be firmly on the new upgrade package and how quickly the team can unlock its potential.
"We're bringing a new package to Austria, and, as with any upgrade, the key objective will be to understand it and maximise its potential throughout the weekend."
"Hopefully it'll take us closer to where we want to be, and we get to experience some good racing in front of our home support,” he said.

There is a sense that Austria could prove to be an important checkpoint in Red Bull’s season. The team has shown flashes of competitiveness but has not always been able to consistently extract maximum performance from the RB22.
The new package represents an opportunity to address some of those shortcomings and provide a clearer picture of where Red Bull stands against its rivals.
For Verstappen, the mission is straightforward: hit the ground running, understand the upgrades as quickly as possible and turn home-track support into on-track results.
And with the roar of the Red Bull Ring crowd behind him, he sounds more than ready to get to work.
