’70s Rock Band Announces Exclusive Update Amid 50th Anniversary

KISS is continuing the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its landmark 1976 album Destroyer with the announcement of an exclusive new merchandise collection and a comprehensive book that explores the making of one of the band's most important releases.

The legendary rock band revealed its new Spirit Of ’76 Collection, a tribute to the iconic Spirit Of ’76 Tour that helped turn KISS into one of the biggest rock acts of the decade.

According to BraveWords, the collection includes a matching cabana shirt and shorts set, a Destroyer ’76 shirt, The Spirit Of ’76 T-shirt, Be Destroyed By KISS T-shirt, a blacklight screen-printed serigraph poster and a commemorative towel.

The anniversary celebration will continue later this year with the release of KISS Destroyer: The Definitive Visual History: Making And Touring The Legendary Album, Official And Authorized, arriving on Oct. 27. The book was created by bestselling author Ken Sharp alongside KISS founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons.

The upcoming 272-page book promises an in-depth look at both the recording of Destroyer and the tour that followed. According to details released by the band, readers will gain access to stories from the studio and the road, including revelations about creative decisions, behind-the-scenes conflicts and memorable celebrity encounters.

    Among the topics covered are:

Marlon Brando’s significance on the direction of the albumTensions in the sound studioThe destruction of Paul Stanley’s favorite guitarCreating the costumes and the cover artworkThe photo shoots to promote the recordA dare that led to the birth of the KISS ArmyDavid Bowie’s influence on the stage designThe band’s hijinks on tourEncounters with Karen Carpenter, Margaret Hamilton, Paul Lynde, and other stars

The book features interviews with more than 50 contributors, including exclusive new conversations with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and producer Bob Ezrin. It also includes hundreds of photographs, some of which have never been published before.

Fans can also expect detailed examinations of every song on the album, information about demos that did not make the final release and insights into who gave the hit ballad “Beth” its title.

The anniversary announcements arrive as KISS continues to build its next chapter following the conclusion of the band's End of the Road World Tour in December 2023.

Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons recently discussed the group's upcoming avatar-based production planned for Las Vegas in 2028. The project is being developed by Pophouse Entertainment, the company behind ABBA Voyage.

“What we’re doing will absolutely blow people away, it’s as real as you and us sitting here. It’s immersive; it will be mind-boggling,” Stanley told USA Today.

Stanley also revealed that the experience will take place inside a specially designed venue reportedly being built for the project.

“You have to build an arena to make sure everybody’s seat is the perfect viewing distance and angle. But quite honestly, I don’t think anybody is going to sit. It’s not going to be like, ‘Gee, that looks just like an amplifier.’ It’s not a concert in that sense; it’s an immersive experience.”

Gene Simmons hinted that the production will extend beyond a traditional concert presentation.

“There’s a motion picture. There’s a script. There are directors … We’re like that caterpillar that looks like it’s at the end of its life and goes into its cocoon, but what comes out is more beautiful than it’s ever been.”

Pophouse Entertainment is reportedly constructing a $200 million venue in Las Vegas for the experience. The company previously acquired KISS’ song catalog, name, image and likeness rights, including the band’s iconic face-paint designs.

Through new merchandise, a definitive historical book, and future avatar performances, KISS is marking the 50th anniversary of Destroyer by connecting its celebrated past with an ambitious future.
