A man is facing several charges including aggravated DUI after he was involved in a deadly crash with a 17-year-old who was riding a dirt bike in a southwest suburb, police said on Tuesday.
Maxie Robinson, 38, of Joliet was charged with aggravated DUI, two counts of DUI and two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the incident that occurred around 8:40 p.m. on June 22, police said.
The scene unfolded when a 17-year-old boy riding a Honda dirt bike eastbound on West Jefferson Street near North Hickory Street in Joliet disregarded a red light and was struck in an intersection by a Chevrolet Impala driven by Robinson, witnesses told police.
Robinson was heading northbound on North Hickory Street when he crashed into the teen and it is believed he had a green light, police said. After striking the teen, Robinson also crashed into a parked vehicle.
The crash caused the teen to be ejected from the dirt bike and he was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision, police said.
The teen was later identified by authorities as Devin C. Davis of Minooka.
Two other dirt bike riders who were with the teen before the crash stopped at the intersection before the collision occurred, police said. After the crash, Robinson exited his vehicle and allegedly attacked one of the other dirt bike riders, injuring them, police said.
Officers at the scene noticed signs of possible impairment while speaking with Robinson and he admitted to drinking before the crash, police said. He agreed to participate in a field sobriety test, after which he was taken into custody.
Open alcohol was also found inside Robinson’s car by police officers at the scene.
He was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility after processing at JPD.
The two other dirt bike riders, who are adults, were each cited for operating a non-highway vehicle on a roadway and both bikes were towed from the scene.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Anyone with video footage or additional information related to the crash is asked to contact Joliet Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 815-724-3010.
