The Omaha Diaries, Day 9: Perkins

Chapelboro.com’s coverage of Carolina baseball in the Men’s College World Series is proudly presented by High & Rubish Insurance Agency.

Chapelboro’s Michael Koh is in Omaha to cover UNC Baseball as it plays in the Men’s College World Series. During Michael’s stay, he’ll publish a daily series featuring his thoughts and observations from Omaha, as well as his usual coverage of the team.

Day 1: The Venice of the Midwest

    Day 2: Autographs

Day 3: The Center of the Universe

    Day 4: Scenes from Rocco’s

Day 5: Easy Like Sunday Morning

    Day 6: Last Flags Flying

    Day 7: David’s Team

    Day 8: Father’s Day

It stands resolute on Abbot Drive, the road connecting Eppley Airfield with downtown Omaha. In between those two destinations is a no man’s land of hotels, empty lots, casinos and gentlemen’s clubs. The Candlewood Suites, designated as the official media hotel for the Men’s College World Series, sits along this strip.

And beside the Candlewood Suites is the subject of our story, its green, gold and white sign blazing furiously against the landscape. This is Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, the steadfast business which has come to the rescue of many a hungry media member at many an ungodly hour.

You see, Perkins is open 24 hours a day. Its cozy interior is never barred to the needy. It doesn’t discriminate and it doesn’t judge. When you walk into Perkins, your outside identity remains at the door. Now, you are simply a customer longing for some comfort food.

The menu is predictable: hearty breakfast food, American staples for lunch and dinner, and a robust selection of pies to cap your meal with a sweet treat. Do not feel constrained by the time of day at Perkins. Do you want a slice of meatloaf at 10 a.m.? No one will look at you askance if you do. Craving an omelet as midnight approaches? Coming right up. And don’t forget that slice of apple pie to go, placed in its box like a Christmas present just for you.

None of this will weigh heavily on your wallet. In fact, simply show your hotel keycard from next door to receive a very generous discount. It seems Perkins knows its target audience well.

Covering the College World Series, like working at Perkins, is a 24-hour affair. Eight teams play games almost every day for two weeks, and media and fans from across the country (or, this year, from across the southeast) converge on Omaha to take in every last second of it. If the team you’re following just so happens to reach the championship and push it to a decisive Game 3, your stay lasts as long as possible.

Omaha has plenty of “nicer” restaurants in its downtown sector. The Old Market district is a lovely area catered to foot traffic, and the blocks around Charles Schwab Field are filled with sports bars and the like. But once you’ve conducted your business in the city and retreated back to the quieter realm of the Candlewood Suites – taking extra care not to venture too closely toward that gentlemen’s club – sometimes you feel the need for a nightcap.

Your stomach rumbles. Your soul cries out. Your eyes wander. Out the window, across the parking lot. There, beneath a billowing American flag and calling out like an old friend, stands your salvation.

No matter the time, the day or the mood, Perkins will always be there for you.
