With a Zelda Direct coming up later today, we're all waiting on news about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake's release date.
Thus far, all we've got to go on is a release window and a short teaser trailer showing Link snoozing away.
Of course, GTA 6 is playing havoc with the all sorts of release schedules for the rest of 2026, so that just adds another spanner in the works.
So, whether you're after a new Switch 2 console or already have yours ready to go, here's what you need to know about the Ocarina of Time remake release date and what to expect.
When could the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake release?
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will release in 2026, as confirmed by Nintendo.
This was announced during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, with the announcement going live on social media too.
View oEmbed on the source websiteThere’s no word on the exact timing for the Ocarina of Time remake release date, and with the looming giant of GTA 6 weighing heavily on the industry at large, Nintendo will have to carefully consider when to push such a high-profile and anticipated title to market.
Typically, Nintendo has at least one first-party game come out each month. June has Star Fox, Splatoon Raiders drops in July, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave arrives in September and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches in October.
This leaves only August, November and December.
August would be a decent candidate and would get ahead of what has turned out to be an incredibly busy September. Nintendo only revealed Star Fox a couple of months ahead of its launch, so it’s not out of the question that the Ocarina of Time remake could repeat this trick.
Nintendo has the benefit (and economic misfortune) that Grand Theft Auto 6 is not coming to the Switch 2, and so can operate on its own terms somewhat, but no doubt the attentions of many of those who make up Nintendo’s core audience will be elsewhere when Rockstar unleashes the beast.
Though if there were ever a game to go toe-to-toe with Grand Theft Auto 6, the Ocarina of Time remake would likely be the one to do it, but it’s hard to imagine Nintendo will time it to coincide with the original's release date of 21 November 1998.
On that note, GTA 6 doesn’t release until 19 November 2026, leaving a nice gap for the Ocarina of Time that many others would not dare to fill. This would allow Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which launches 23 October 2026, some breathing room as well. Seeing as it’s the first CoD game to grace a Nintendo console since the Wii U days, Nintendo will be keen to see the game do well and further cement the Nintendo Switch 2 as a viable option for current-generation gaming.
That then leaves December, which could prove to be a great release window for the Ocarina of Time remake. The Nintendo 64 is old enough that many parents today may have played the original in their youth and would be excited to gift a remake to their children for Christmas (an excellent excuse to buy it for themselves). Said children, presumably, would not have been playing Grand Theft Auto 6 either, meaning Nintendo has a large unaddressed audience to tap into.
That’s all to say, we speculate that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will launch in August, November or December this year.
What to expect from the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake
View oEmbed on the source websiteGiven the technical limitations and age of the original game, we expect the Ocarina of Time remake to be a comprehensive reimagining.
What’s more, Nintendo already remade the original for the 3DS with improved graphics, rendering another such endeavour slightly pointless, though given that Star Fox is ostensibly the same between its many remakes, it’s not entirely out of the question.
We don’t imagine the game will stray that far from the story beats, but we could see many of the puzzles and levels revamped. The Water Temple in particular was something of a gauntlet run. Hopefully, a new Water Temple would be a satisfying challenge rather than an exercise in tedium.
In terms of the visuals, Nintendo seems to be going for a more 'realistic' take — as realistic as a fantasy game can be — as opposed to the cel-shaded visuals of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The trailer is running at 60FPS, which should make for a smooth gameplay experience, which the original absolutely was not.
It will be interesting to see if they open up the world at all, which could be done by expanding Hyrule Field and populating it with more points of interest, quests and characters, but Nintendo may be slightly wary of tampering with the original formula too much.
Though this would increase the time and complexity of the project, we don’t know how long the Ocarina of Time remake has been in development for.
The reality is, is that we really don’t have long to wait at all, so we will find out sooner rather than later!
