Two businesses were broken into early Monday on Chicago’s Northwest Side, with surveillance video showing thieves burglarizing both establishments.
The incidents were reported at Snacks and Smoke, located at Cicero and Belmont avenues in Portage Park, and Milano Bar, along School Street near Harding Avenue in Avondale.
Surveillance footage showed the smash-and-grab burglary inside the snack and smoke shop, as thieves ransacked the business.
The owner, who chose not to speak on camera, said it’s the fourth time the business has been targeted in 11 months.
Roughly a mile and a half away, thieves armed with sledgehammers struck Milano Bar, getting in and out within two minutes.
“I’m just done, you know, I just want it to be over, because it’s too much,” said Kasi Bereta, the bar’s owner.
Gaming machines appeared to be the target.
Both were destroyed and will costs thousands of dollars to replace.
Footage showed the suspects taking turns smashing the machines before finally breaking one open and walking out with cash – less than $200.
At the same time, another burglar scoped out the cash register and took less than $10.
“Whatever was open, it was empty, five dollars, quarters only. So why you take the inside, for what?” Bereta said. “That’s just ridiculous.”
The burglary marked the second time the bar had been broken into, costing more than $1,000 in just glass repairs.
For Bereta, her message is simple.
“Just stop,” she said. “Feel us, how we feel, and you know, I believe karma. I think one day they will catch them in [a] different way.”
Police haven’t said if the two break-ins were related, and as of Monday evening, no arrests had been made.
NBC Chicago reached out to the aldermen representing the wards where both businesses are located, but hadn’t heard back as of late Monday.
