While Pope Leo XIV is currently facing his own health problems, his family is now having to cope with a further difficult diagnosis. It has been revealed by Deborah Prevost that her husband, the pontiff’s older brother Louis Prevost, is suffering from multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.
As the family adjusts to this news, Deborah is clinging to hope for both her husband and the Pope, giving an update on their conditions and the difficulties that lie ahead.
While speaking with CBS News on Tuesday, October 13, Deborah said that Louis has multiple myeloma, which is a cancer of the plasma cells. The man from Florida was first diagnosed with the illness in 2017 and had been able to keep the disease under control after undergoing treatment, but the cancer came back at the beginning of this year.
Louis Prevost, brother of newly elected Pope Leo XIV, Robert Prevost, looks on outside his home in Port Charlotte, Florida, on May 9, 2025. Robert Francis Prevost became the first pope from the United States on May 8, 2025, picking the papal name Leo XIV after cardinals from around the world elected him leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. Tens of thousands of people packed in St Peter’s Square cheered as Prevost appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, waving with both hands, smiling and bowing. The family has been handling the news of both diagnoses over a short time. Louis and his younger brother, Pope Leo, spoke last week before Louis went in for his clinical trial. Deborah stated that the brothers have been keeping in touch as they deal with their health issues.
She told CBS News that they were still praying and were keeping their spirits high for both of them.
Deborah was unable to give any specific information regarding the Pope’s medical condition, but she did hope that his cancer had been picked up in its early stages. She also stated that she had not been told whether he would require chemotherapy or radiation.
Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that arises in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that is present in the bone marrow. These cells normally assist the body in combating infections by producing antibodies. However, when cancerous plasma cells multiply, they are able to displace the healthy blood cells and damage the bones, the kidneys, and other parts of the body.

In 2019, Louis had various forms of treatment, including stem cell therapy and taking part in a clinical trial. As per Deborah, the disease had stayed at a “very low level” afterwards, but he lost his remission about three months ago. His present prognosis has not yet been made public.
The fact that Louis is ill coincides with Pope Leo XIV, who is 71 years old, recovering from surgery to have the lower lobe of his right lung removed. The Vatican has stated that the pope has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a type of non-small cell lung cancer.
A lung lesion was identified by the doctors, and the diagnosis was confirmed at surgery. The Vatican has not made public the stage of the cancer, whether it has spread or whether further treatment will be needed. At present, the two brothers are handling their own separate cancer diagnoses, while the family still hopes for their recoveries.
