Reds Designate Chris Paddack For Assignment

The Reds announced that right-hander Pierce Johnson has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list and that righty Julian Garcia has been selected to the roster. The Garcia move was reported yesterday. To open space for those two, they have optioned righty Zach Maxwell and designated righty Chris Paddack for assignment.

Cincinnati picked up Paddack in May after he had been released by the Marlins. At the time, the Reds had Hunter Greene, Brandon Williamson and Rhett Lowder on the injured list. Paddack made a few starts until Lowder came off the IL, which bumped him into a long relief role.

In total, Paddack made six appearances as a Red, three starts and three out of the bullpen. He logged 22 1/3 innings, allowing 6.04 earned runs per nine. That’s a tiny sample of work but it continues a trend of Paddack not being terribly effective at getting big league hitters out. He was injured for most of 2022 and 2023. Since the start of the 2024 season, he has a 5.53 ERA in 299 1/3 innings. His 5.9% walk rate in that time is quite good but his 17.7% strikeout rate and 37.3% ground ball rate have both been subpar.

Even before the injury odyssey, his effectiveness was starting to wane. He had an excellent rookie season in 2019, posting a 3.33 ERA that year, but was closer to 5.00 in each of the two following seasons. Dating back to the start of 2020, he has logged 494 big league innings with a 5.27 ERA.

Despite the track record, the Marlins took a shot on him this offseason by giving him a $4MM deal. That didn’t pan out, as Paddack posted a 7.63 ERA over seven appearances before getting bumped from the roster. The Marlins remain on the hook for the remainder of that salary. Any other club can roster him while only paying him the prorated league minimum, which is subtracted from what the Fish pay. The Reds stepped up for that offer for a while but are now walking away after a little more than a month.

Paddack now heads into DFA limbo. He isn’t likely to have much trade appeal. He has more than enough service time to reject an outright assignment while retaining his salary. It’s possible the Reds simplify the process by releasing him. One way or another, he’ll likely be on the open market in a few days. He’ll see if any other club is willing to give him a shot. Though the results haven’t been great, there are a few clubs in need of back-end starters at the moment, such as the Phillies, Angels, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Royals and more.
