Just as the rumours predicted, Valve has lifted the embargo on Steam Machine reviews and released the pricing details for their new pre-made home PC.
This comes a number months after Valve announced the console-like cube, and not long after the launch of the Steam Controller that is designed to work with it. Indeed, the component shortages around the globe may have messed up the timetable a bit.
Nonetheless, things are starting to move forward, and it's with some excitement that we delve into this new information. One thing that's immediately clear is that the price of this new hardware will be too steep for some people.
Here in the UK, the 512 GB version of the Steam Machine will set you back £879. In other territories, this cheaper edition is priced at $1049 USD, 1509 CAD, 1039 EUR, 1609 AUD or 4389 PLN.
The beefier 2 TB version of the Steam Machine, here in the UK, will cost £1149. Elsewhere around the world, that price will be $1349 USD, 1919 CAD, 1359 EUR, 2,109 AUD or 5739 PLN.
Like we said, these sorts of prices will be prohibitive to a large section of the population. And those who can afford it will have to ask themselves, 'Is this the best PC I can get for this price? Is the Steam OS and the extra convenience worth it?'
If you're interested in buying a Steam Machine, the best thing to do now would be to head to its official website and declare your interest. You have until 6pm on Thursday 25 June to do just that, before Valve starts contacting the people who have been randomly selected to buy one.
As we mentioned earlier, the first wave of Steam Machine reviews have also gone live today, timed to coincide with the price reveal.
Jacqueline Thomas from IGN's review gave it an 8 out of 10, with their summary saying that the Steam Machine "is a bit too expensive to take on the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. But even at that seemingly high price, it’s still one of the cheapest and almost certainly the easiest way to get into PC gaming right now, and that makes it an easy recommendation."
Richard Leadbetter at Digital Foundry's review doesn't give a score, but it does say, "Technology-wise, it doesn't shift the needle, but I love the package. The form factor is beautiful, it's wonderfully put together and it's virtually silent in operation. To see it is to want it.
"However, it's going to cost you. I guess pricing is relative in the current environment and ultimately, you'll have to make the call on whether the value proposition works for you. Assuming you can get a Steam Machine at all, of course."
View Green Video on the source websiteAndy Edser of PC Gamer, meanwhile, gave it 62 out of 100. The subheading at the top of the piece says it all: "A wonderful design can't beat the ugly realities of pricing, performance, and consumer value."
The summary at the end adds, "Valve's attempt to bring PC gaming to your living room is well-intentioned, but the ugly realities of the memory crisis have left it with a hefty price tag. If it had more grunt, it'd be easier to recommend—but an off-the-boil GPU and plenty of software quirks leaves it feeling like an expensive curio, rather than a gaming device for the masses."
