The college football season is now heading into its 2nd full week, and the Fearless Prediction is riding high. We weren’t too far off with the Tennessee-Furman game. We picked the Vols to win 55-6 and the final score was 56-9. But it’s time to put that in the rearview mirror and focus on the Vols’ next game against Georgia Tech.
The Vols saw some really good things out of true freshman QB Faizon Brandon against the Paladins. Brandon, the SEC Freshman of the Week, threw for 226 yards and 3 scores and ran for 68 yards and 2 more TDs. He’s the first SEC player to throw for 3 TDs and run for 2 TDs in his first FBS start since Cam Newton did so in 2010. Another positive sign was a good-looking stint from backup George MacIntyre, who went 5-for-7 with a TD pass.
Brandon got 10 carries against the Paladins. If he runs that much weekly, he will be susceptible to more hits, increasing the possibility of MacIntyre seeing some important snaps later in the season.
Tennessee receiver Mike Matthews had a big day in that season opener, with 4 catches for 132 yards and 2 TDs. But he wasn’t the only one, as 11 different Vols caught at least 1 pass against Furman. RB DeSean Bishop, as expected, led the Vols in rushing with 97 yards. As a team, Tennessee picked up a whopping 329 yards on the ground against Furman.
Defensively, lineman Xavier Gilliam had quite the Tennessee debut. The Penn State transfer led the Vols with 6 tackles, 3 sacks and 5 tackles for loss. And the news gets even better for UT heading into the Georgia Tech game, with linebacker Arion Carter returning after serving his 1-game NCAA suspension for accepting a $427 flight from an agent.
As for Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets are still smarting from last Thursday’s 14-13 loss to Colorado. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to win in the final seconds, but former Vol Boo Carter blocked a potential game winning field goal.
Georgia Tech QB Alberto Mendoza, brother of 2025 Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, completed 17-of-23 passes for 237 yards in his GT debut. His go-to receiver is Jordan Allen, who had 8 catches for 113 yards against the Buffaloes. But overall, this doesn’t look like an offense that will scare many opponents. Georgia Tech only accounted for 288 yards against Colorado, with RB Justice Haynes leading the Yellow Jackets in rushing with only 64 yards.
On defense, the Yellow Jackets do have some playmakers. Linebacker Kyle Efford led the way against Colorado with 13 tackles, 1 of 3 Georgia Tech players with at least 10 tackles in the season opener.
Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key was not happy with his team’s performance against Colorado, saying that they were “poorly prepared, poorly coached, poorly disciplined, soft football team.” Tennessee presents an opportunity for the Yellow Jackets to get back on track.
This game is an ever increasingly rare affair. Two Power 4 conference teams playing an on-campus home-and-home series instead of moving to a neutral site in Dublin, or Green Bay, or Charlotte, etc. This game will be played in Atlanta, which is a relatively easy drive for Vols fans in Knoxville. Expect there to be a lot of orange at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday night.
The Vols understand that this game certainly will be more difficult than what they encountered last weekend. This will be Brandon’s first road start, and while Atlanta might not be the equivalent of going to Athens, Tennessee still has a true freshman taking snaps.
But we don’t think that Georgia Tech has enough offense to stay with the Vols. There might be some hiccups, but in the end, this should be a stress-free night for UT head coach Josh Heupel.
