Miami Dolphins Fans Opinion Of The Roster Following OTA’s

This past week, I asked the following question:

Reflecting on the recent Miami Dolphins OTAs: which player performances or position group developments have given you the most optimism for the upcoming season, and conversely, which areas still leave you with doubts or unanswered questions?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

FLexile has seen the other South Florida pro franchises do what the Dolphins are attempting to do and hopes they can follow the same model. Also sees Ewers stepping in at some point, ultimately causing a quarterback controversy.

I’ve watched the Marlins, Heat and Panthers build winning teams from scratch. With each of them, you could see the right pieces start to be put in place. I have great hopes that this new regime gets it right.

Malik Willis has a great season but suffers a mild injury around game 10-11. Quinn Ewers fills in and lights it up down the stretch and now there is a tiny QB controversy heading into the playoffs.

Phoenix6 saw some highlights but would have liked to see more of the rookie class step up in OTAs.

Defense Dominates: Strong defensive performances, with the secondary tallying multiple interceptions & the pass rush applying consistent pressure. Highlighted by interceptions from defenders like Kyle Louis & Dante Trader.

Rookie Progress: 2nd-year EDGE Chop Chop Robinson continued to flash his pass-rushing skills, & receivers like Malik Washington & Kevin Coleman Jr. emerged as reliable targets.

Weakness (Opinion): The Dolphins have heavily integrated their draft class into on-field reps.

The open OTAs have set the stage for position battles heading into the upcoming mandatory minicamps.

I would have liked to have had more rookie names highlighted.

    davidson11 says Ewers=Pennington.

If Quinn Ewers were a little bit bigger and more durable, he’d be really good. Reminds me of Chad Pennington.

Ejplaya is still worried about that WR depth, but feeling good about the O-line improvement.

Biggest concern is the wr group. Biggest jump is from the o line.

coluccim thinks this roster has weaknesses at every position outside of running back.

The team is below average/unknown at every position besides RB. If Jonah isn’t starting, I would feel much better about the oline.

I like both top receivers drafted, but it will take 5-8 weeks to learn any pro offense. I expect we will see a few blown coverages also on the backend, especially if we can’t have some semblance of a pass rush.

MiamiItaliano believes the linebackers are a bright spot, while the wideouts remain the biggest concern.

The linebacker group will smash offenses this season. The concern is the inexperienced wide receiver group.

TheRoo1 sees some growing pains on the horizon.

This year will be an odd year for Miami. With Willis being new to the entire Offense, expect at least one early season win, until defenses adjust to his tendencies. I would expect (as most do) run heavy play calling with an otherwise dink and dunk approach. Achane will break a few long ones, otherwise the TE’s will become heavily involved as outlets until the line can show consistent enough play to allow more than one or two long shots per game.

Defensively, I’m guessing the young players to be flying to the ball. Tipped balls and strips should occur frequently, but as the youngs guys learn Haf’s zone heavy approach, there will be enough blown coverages to keep the D from shining. I expect the run D to be average to slightly above average, but the pass D to start the season very poor, and by season end, if we are lucky they become average.

Cover 3 without a stellar safety will be a challenge, and Haf loves cover 3.

Pgharrell is feeling relieved after seeing something from the QB room and has high hopes for Rodriguez.

Relieved and now more confident about the quarterback position. Willis and Ewers both seem more invested in winning than what we had previously. Excited to see, watch Rodriguez at linebacker, and of course the main man Seiler making quarterbacks kiss dirt. Let’s shock the non believers Dolphins! Go Dolphins!

PA phinphan is feeling positive about the secondary and linebackers, but still has questions about the wideouts, edge rushers, and one side of the OL.

Reflecting on the recent Miami Dolphins OTAs: which player performances or position group developments have given you the most optimism for the upcoming season: The back 7 on defense. The secondary is receiving praise. Trader sounds as though he is ready to take the next step. Lonnie Johnson, Jr. is doing well. Brents and Johnson are earning positive reviews. These four along with the LBs (Brooks, Rodriguez, and Dodsen) make a solid back 7 plus there’s still Willie Gay and Ronnie Harrison.

and conversely, which areas still leave you with doubts or unanswered questions? The edge rushers, WRs, and the right side of the Oline leave me asking lots of questions. Is Chop ready to step up? Who lines up opposite him? Is there a WR who would even be a number 2 on any other team? Will Austin Jackson be/stay healthy? How much will Jonah be since he’s back to his preferred side?

Pod of Dolphins, I think, wants to see things going in the right direction by mid-season.

I want to see players development as well, by the middle of the season I want to see this puppies scratching.

Dolfanjoe has high hopes but is prepared for things going south.

Hoping for the best, but ready for the worst ! The key to the season is development. Players and team looking better towards the end of the season than the beginning. Bottom of the roster should change all year long. Players on this team will be given a chance to show what they can or cannot do ! There future will depend on it, and ours as an over all team !

    UpInPensacola says why not us?

If it can happen for the Knicks after fifty some odd years, it can happen for the Dolphins.

Those are our comments for this evening. It seems that most of us here are feeling positive about certain areas of the team, but have major reservations about others at this point. I guess the reality is that it’s hard to rebuild an entire team with one draft and little to no money to spend in free agency. Next offseason is when these new guys will have to really shine, although I feel like they have done fairly well with what they had to work with this offseason, aside from a questionable move or two. As always, thank you to each of you who took the time to answer our Phinsider Question Of The Day.
