Atlanta handed Suarez a three-year, $45MM deal to form an imposing late-inning tandem with closer Raisel Iglesias. It was working out well for the Braves until the elbow injury. Suarez had a microscopic 0.56 ERA over 31 appearances before hitting the IL. He racked up 12 holds and four saves.
While the loss of Suarez was significant, the rest of the bullpen picked up the slack. Atlanta’s relievers rank third in ERA. Only the Red Sox bullpen has allowed fewer runs this season. Dylan Lee leads the National League with 30 holds. Didier Fuentes has emerged as a high-leverage weapon. Iglesias has been his usual steady self, with 34 saves in 37 opportunities.
Murphy has been up and down with the Braves several times this summer. He’s made one start and four relief appearances in his first taste of the majors. The righty has a 6.00 ERA across 12 innings. Murphy is a well-regarded prospect in the organization. He was having a solid season as a starter at Triple-A. The Braves needed him in a multi-inning relief role, but his future with the team could still be as a member of the rotation.
