Could a Caleb Williams Extension Come As Early as Next January?

Even though Caleb Williams isn’t eligible to sign an extension until after this season, we already know a second contract for the Chicago Bears’ QB1 is on the mind of General Manager Ryan Poles.

And, as it turns out, he is not alone.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio rattles off a collection of quarterbacks who could use the extension recently signed by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as a data point for ongoing or upcoming contract negotiations. Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield, Houston’s C.J. Stroud, and Seattle’s Sam Darnold are among those who could be angling for new deals soon. Hence, it wasn’t surprising to see their names listed. However, Florio also mentions Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

This section stopped me in my tracks:

When the time comes for Williams to get a new deal, the Mahomes number will drive the discussion. Especially if Williams continues to be on a trajectory that could put him among the top four or five quarterbacks in football.

We’ve already heard talk of Williams having expectations that would be more than eye-popping. And we also expect that Williams will make it known that he wants his contract not after the 2026 postseason ends, but promptly upon the opening of the window for a new deal after the Bears face the Vikings in Week 18.

Why carry the injury risk into the 2026 postseason? No quarterback on his rookie deal has tried to do that, even though the CBA wrinkle has been hiding in plain sight since 2011.

    Hoo boy, that’s juicy.

A few things that stand out from Florio’s snippet:

That Florio is already hearing about what Caleb Williams could expect in a contract extension is worth noting. Just because Williams can’t sign a new deal until after the end of this year, it doesn’t mean the two sides can’t talk shop. So long as everything is above board, it would behoove the Bears and their quarterback to have an idea of what each side wants. Also notable is Florio’s expectation that Williams will want his deal as soon as he can sign a new one, which opens right after the Bears and Vikings Week 18 game concludes. How wild would it be to see news of an extension being ironed out after a road win in Minnesota? And finally, the acknowledgment from Florio that Williams’ deal could make him one of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the league (if he stays on his current trajectory) puts into perspective how people outside of Chicago feel about the Bears’ signal caller.
