Malia and Sasha Obama have largely stayed out of the public spotlight since their time in the White House, but on Thursday they made a rare appearance in their hometown.
The former first daughters joined their parents onstage at the Obama Presidential Center grand opening ceremony, both receiving praise in speeches their mother and father gave at the event.
Michelle Obama acknowledged the pair were forced into a life they never chose.
“To our daughters, Malia and Sasha, who will always be my babies. Even though we’re no longer playing hide and seek on the South Lawn with Beau or hosting sleepovers in the solarium – I see a lot of sleepover girls here -you both have grown into such brilliant and beautiful young women, making your way out there in the world,” she said during her remarks. “Thank you for bringing so much joy and spirit and energy to a life you had no voice in choosing. And for making us proud every step of the way.”
Former president Barack Obama also thanked the duo, saying “you mean everything to me.”
Keeping the sisters, now 25 and 27, out of tabloids and the public eye has been a priority for the Obamas since he served as president.
With only occasional appearances on their parents’ social media accounts and limited event attendance in the decade since, the presidential daughters have remained private as they entered their adult lives.
When debuting her film “The Heart” at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Malia Obama opted to drop her last name, instead using her middle name and going by Malia Ann.
“The challenge for us is letting us give them any help at all,” Barack Obama confessed on an episode of “The Pivot Podcast”. “I mean they’re very sensitive about this stuff. They’re very stubborn about it.”
The sisters were far from the only notable names onstage and in the stands at Thursday’s event in Chicago, however.
Other big names included Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Dwyane Wade, John Legend, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder and more.
