The Brewers Have Lost Quinn Priester for the Rest of the Season

I had no clue when I wrote earlier today about Zack Wheeler’s magnificent recovery from surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome that I’d be talking about it again just a few hours later. It’s a relatively rare procedure for pitchers, and one from which not every pitcher returns to form. That’s why I wanted to remark on Wheeler in the first place, because he’s been incredible.

The Brewers will no doubt be hoping for the same thing next year for righty Quinn Priester, who had yet to pitch this year while dealing with a complex nerve/arm issue. It turned out to need rib-removal surgery to address, which means we’re talking about thoracic outlet syndrome:

Brewers starter Quinn Priester will have thoracic outlet decompression surgery on Monday and will miss the entirety of this season. Here’s a detailed explanation for why he has no regrets about waiting this long to get to this point. pic.twitter.com/QEyuwToxyW

In short, thoracic outlet syndrome involves the compression of blood vessels and/or nerves in between the collar bone and the first rib, basically way up in your shoulder. Guys can experience a range of symptoms that originate with the syndrome (shoulder pain, neck pain, numbness and weakness down the arm), and it can take some time to conclude that nothing can be done beyond surgery. I think it’s also a situation where, because the surgery is pretty involved and recovery to the big league mound is not always guaranteed, players try to avoid it if at all possible.

That said, Quinn Priester expressed confidence in those videos about the state of the procedure these days, and it’s exactly what I mentioned this morning: the hope is that medical science has advanced in the last decade such that recovery from TOS surgery will look more like Wheeler, and less like the guys who never made it back.

Priester, 25, came to the Brewers before the 2025 season, during which time he posted a 3.32 ERA over 157.1 innings and looked poised to fulfill the promise of his prospect days. Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to pitch this year, and now he and the Brewers will have to hope that he can be back in time to pitch most of 2027.

Meanwhile, the Brewers have covered his absence more than capably, and since he was already known to be out for a while, I don’t think this surgery decision impacts how Milwaukee will proceed through the Trade Deadline one way or the other.
