A New Caleb Williams Fun Fact Has Emerged

Credit Caleb Williams for handling the pressure that was thrown his way last season.

Sure, there is a ton of pressure that comes with being the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback. Plus, there is a ton of pressure to live up to the hype that comes with being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. To this point, Williams has handled that stuff (and what comes with it) as well as you could have expected. But perhaps more impressive is how he has handled the pressure that comes with facing blitz packages thrown his way by opposing defenses.

Some points of emphasis via this post from Nicholas Moreano:

“According to two different stats-based websites, Williams was the most blitzed quarterback in the NFL last season. Radar360 logged 174 quarterback blitzes, and SumerSports tracked 203 blitz plays, both were the most in each database.” “SumerSports also calculated Williams EPA/Play (Expected Points Added) when blitzed vs. EPA/Play (Not Blitzed), and the Bears’ quarterback finished with a +0.280 advantage, behind only Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson (+0.348).” “When defenses tried to speed up Williams’ internal clock by blitzing, the Bears’ quarterback performed better. … Williams still finished second behind Jackson in passing plays when blitzed.”

What stands out to me about the stats Nicholas Moreano provides above is that they match what we saw with the eye test. Bears fans who watched every offensive snap from Caleb Williams over the last two years noticed how much better he was at handling pressure in Year 2 than he was in Year 1. I love it when the eye test and the statistical data line up.

This feels like a good time to stop and check out the projections for Caleb Williams’ 2026 season. Shout out to colleague Patrick Flowers, who unearthed the numbers, broke down the projection here, and even created a nifty chart, which I’ll share below.

Projections are conservative by nature, so I hope you’re not freaking out when you see 3,821 passing yards and 25 touchdowns. Those numbers are respectable. And the way I see ’em, they are representative of the high floor Williams has as he enters Year 3 as a pro.

Also worth sharing here is that Caleb Williams posted an 81.0 overall grade when blitzed last season, according to Pro Football Focus’ Data. A chunk of that grade is rooted in the 91.5 running grade, but the 73.4 passing grade and 91.2 passer rating are respectable numbers. If Williams can improve there (and get some luck from receivers, who posted an 8.9 percent drop rate on QB1’s throws when blitzed) in 2026, then we could see the Bears quarterback’s development take another step in the right direction.

One last nugget before I press publish on this post. Check out what Micah Parsons had to say about the Bears quarterback here:

"Where there's ice, there's also fire, and I'm the fire." – @MicahhParsons11 ?NFL Top 100 Players of 2026… coming soon. pic.twitter.com/dzpO5FR2cE

    More from Micah:

“He really sped his clock up. He wasn’t taking as many sacks. He felt confidence in the system. I always want to see people succeed, regardless of who they play for. Just don’t want to see you succeed against me.”

Caleb Williams made adjustments as a second-year player. Even opposing players on rival teams picked up on it. As a result, his game was better, and his team’s record at the end of the season was better for it. With that being said, Williams’ progression can’t stop here.

I look forward to seeing what’s next. Hopefully, I have enough patience to wait out the 87 days until Week 1 kicks off in September.
