Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin slams the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for snubbing Shubman Gill from the T20I format amid his magnificent form in the ODIs against Afghanistan.
On June 17, the current ODI skipper of Team India smashed a 150-plus run knock on an individual basis to ensure a commanding win over Afghanistan. Shubman Gill has joined the national team for the ODIs after a brilliant IPL 2026 season with the Gujarat Titans.
Due to his recent form, many cricket fans would have thought that Gill could retain his place in the T20Is as well. Proving many wrong, the selection panel keeps the top-order batter away from the team in the shortest format of the game.
Former captain Mohammed Azharuddin was one of the loud voices who went against the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel for not selecting Shubman Gill in the T20Is. Azharuddin believes Gill deserves to represent India across all three formats.
As of now, Shubman Gill is only in the Test and ODI teams as the captain. Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, the board had appointed the batter as the vice-captain of the T20Is only to be dropped.
“Gill is handling (the captaincy job) very well. His individual performance has also improved a lot. He is one of the finest players; I don't know why they don't select him for T20s. He is a good player for all formats and should never have been dropped from any format,” Azharuddin raises the issue to the news agency PTI in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.
Gill performed brilliantly in the IPL 2026 season
The 26-year-old is among the few Indian batters who have been scoring runs in the white-ball format for months now. Before joining the Indian cricket team for the ODIs and one-off Test against Afghanistan, he scored 732 runs in 16 matches and as many innings in IPL 2026 for an average of 45.75 and a strike rate of 163.02.
During the course, the opener of the Gujarat Titans claimed one century and six half-centuries to cement himself as a prolific Twenty20 batter. The IPL 2026 season was considered the best stage for the batter to prove his batting skills as a T20 format batter.
He did well as a batter, and he did well as the captain of the team as well. Despite all of the efforts, the selectors did not pick him for the upcoming T20Is against Ireland and England, and for the 2026 Asian Games as well.
154 runs with a strike rate of 140.00
Talking about yesterday’s game, Shubman Gill was named the best player of the match for his 154-run knock, supported by twenty-two fours and a couple of sixes.
He stayed under the scorching sun of Lucknow for around 40 overs and batted with a strike rate of 140.00. The pressure on the selectors will increase if he continues to score runs consistently in the upcoming games.
