Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson is set to make his musical theatre debut this summer in the returning Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical.
Brought to life by Secret Cinema, this interactive event sees guests transported back to Rydell High for an immersive version of the hit film, complete with rides, sets and plenty of performances.
The cast for these performances has now been announced, with Wilson playing the Teen Angel – famously played by Frankie Avalon in the film. The former The Voice UK coach will be singing the song Beauty School Dropout for each night of the show's eight-week run.
In the press release, Wilson said he decided to take on the role because of a secret history with the musical: "At school I was in Grease and I feel I have to redeem myself. I was not yet the international pop sensation I am today and I only really wanted to do it cos I fancied the girl who played Frenchie (I was Doody) so this is my chance to show everyone I should have got a bigger part. I don’t believe anyone from that production is now a professional singer, so in short, I win.”
He went on in an exclusive chat with Radio Times to tease how much fun the show is set to be: "It's really good, it's inclusive, the audience are a part of the show and you can't go wrong with Grease can you?
"It's not a serious film and it doesn't make any sense, I mean I'm in my late 40s now, and I think most of the cast were that age when they were in the film. But every generation seems to get into Grease. It still seems to capture the imagination of everyone, even now."
Wilson said this show was something of a litmus test to see how he enjoys the world of musical theatre, adding: "I now I'm feeling like, oh God, I've got to do it now, and all the kind of bravado and bullsh******g I've done about how good I'll be, I have to carry it off now. So, yeah, I'm feeling quite nervous about that, but life wouldn't be very interesting if you weren't nervous."
The singer added that, compared to being on stage with the Kaiser Chiefs, this kind of performance leaves much less room for error. "When you're with the band people love it when you mess up or fall over, but this is the one thing I have to get right every night."
The Kaiser Chiefs became a mainstay of the English indie rock scene in the early 2000s with a string of hits like I Predict a Riot, Ruby and Everyday I Love You Less and Less. Last year, the group celebrated 20 years since their debut album Employment with a new tour, and are due to continue UK gigs with a string of outdoor shows this summer.
Wilson in particular is known for interacting with the crowd throughout gigs, a skill which is sure to come in handy for this immersive experience.
On why he does it, he said: "It keeps it entertaining for me, but also the people that have made the effort there to see you, so to involve them is is your duty. It keeps it alive, and vital, and you can't beat that in a live performance, really."
The singer will be joined on stage by Stephanie Costi as Sandy, Giórgios Michaelídes as Danny, Lucy Penrose as Rizzo and Archangelo Ciulla as Kenickie.
The production opens at Evolution London in Battersea Park for a strictly limited run from 22 July to 13 September and tickets are available on the official website.
