A former south suburban police officer was sentenced June 8 to more than five years and three months in federal prison for conspiring to steal cash and drugs from people during traffic stops.
Antoine Larry, 50, of Bolingbrook, was a patrol officer for the Phoenix Police Department when he was found to have conspired with another officer to solicit cash and drugs from people during traffic stops, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
Larry and his partner chose drivers they believed were unlikely to report the misconduct, prosecutors said. If a driver was at risk of being detained or having their car towed, the officers asked for cash bribes in exchange for reduced charges, agreeing not to tow a car or letting the person go without citations, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said the officers also falsified police reports to cover up the scheme. The conspiracy began in at least 2020 and continued until 2022, a statement said.
A jury in federal court in Chicago convicted Larry earlier this year of conspiracy, extortion and attempted extortion charges.
The other officer, Jarrett Snowden, of Lansing, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge before trial and admitted his role in the traffic stop scheme, prosecutors said. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 27.
