Coaches question IHSA decision to shorten girls flag football season

Multiple high school girls flag football coaches said they’re frustrated after the Illinois High School Association shortened the upcoming fall season.

NBC Chicago continues to seek answers from the IHSA as more coaches speak out against the season being trimmed by one week.

The association has given multiple reasons — and said it’s too late to make changes.

“Disappointed in the IHSA decision to shorten our season a week to add to the postseason but still end on October 17th…” said Jim Geovanes, the coach of Oak Park River Forest High School. “We’re just trying to get as many girls as many opportunities as possible. For the IHSA to say health and safety, but then try to squeeze 25 games into 29 days is hypocritical.”

In statements to NBC Chicago about the girls flag football season, the IHSA said the “most important” reason is:

“The schedule change in the State Series (playoff) dates came from the IHSA Flag Football Advisory Committee, which features several coaches,” the association said, in part. “Their rationale was that they wanted more time for recovery/practice/strategy….”

Multiple coaches contend the IHSA should be flexible and start the regular season earlier.

“For the IHSA, I think it’s something that we can get this right,” said Coach Germaine Padilla of Taft High School in Norwood Park. “We can figure this out. And just hopefully we start to have those conversations where we start to move forward.”

Currently, teams can play a maximum of 25 games before state playoffs.

“That becomes very, very difficult to do when you’re trying to do it in five weeks,” Padilla said. “Putting that over seven weeks makes it a lot easier for coaches. I think it’s safer for them. We give them time to heal and recover.”

The IHSA directed NBC Chicago to its Flag Football Advisory Committee for a comment. Our team attempted to reach the group and heard back from one member who said she was not on the committee at the time of the decision.

A former IHSA advisory board member for soccer told NBC Chicago they don’t have final approval for decisions.
