LGBTQ+ Students, Staff, Faculty, and Alumni Are Not ‘Political Controversies of the Day’
A perspective from Terri Phoenix
On June 11, 2026, WFDD – Public Radio published a story about two UNC system schools that deleted pride posts because they supposedly violated a UNC system policy that prohibits speaking about “political controversies of the day.”
I was the director of the LGBTQ Center at UNC-Chapel Hill for 16 years. I am retired now and do not speak on behalf of the university but as a private citizen familiar with the cultural celebrations that happen at UNC-Chapel Hill and other UNC system schools.
I believe the application of the policy mentioned is discriminatory in this case. LGBTQ+ students, staff, faculty, and alumni are community of people who are LGBTQ+ and are not a “political controversy of the day.” Pride month is a recognition and celebration of this community, their culture, and their history.
Pride Month is no different than Latinx Heritage Month, Black History Month, American Indian Heritage Month or other observances of cultural identities. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (and other UNC system schools) celebrate these months proudly at the institutional level.
The UNC System Office should be confronted about this blatant singling out of a community of people who exist at their institutions and labeling them as a political controversy. Why is the equality policy and the maintenance of “neutrality” applied in the case of Pride Month but not to other cultural and community celebrations or recognitions.
