Serena Williams Comeback Just Got Even Bigger: She and Venus Are Teaming Up for Wimbledon Doubles

Just one week after her pro tennis comeback, Serena Williamsis in the news again. But this time she’s not alone. The 44-year-old will join her superstar sisterVenus Williams at Wimbledon this summer.

While both Venus and Serena are listed on the doubles card as a pair, neither was on the ladies’ singles roster. That said, one out of the eight spots was left empty, making it possible for a Williams sister (either Venus or Serena, but not both) to play in the singles match at Wimbledon.

This isn’t the first time the Williams sisters have stepped onto the court at Wimbledon together. Venus and Serena have famously won six championships together, starting in 2000. The pair also had wins in 2002, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2016.

    Serena Williams Retirement

The mom of two (she shares daughters Olympia and Adira with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian) announced her retirement from pro tennis in 2022.

That year, she penned a farewell to the tennis world that was published in Vogue, sharing, “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”

Williams added, “I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition.” And it certainly was…for four years. But in 2026, the tennis phenom made a stellar comeback, surprising the world.

Serena opened up about her comeback during a press conference at the Queen’s Club before her return to the court earlier this month, saying, “In December I definitely was not and then um, I was just talking to a few people and just chatting about different possibilities of just having fun and you know, something a little bit different and so just kept talking and talking and then I was like, well why not?”

She also revealed how her nearest and dearest reacted to her return, adding, “Everyone is so supportive.”

What Do Fans Think of the Venus-Serena Doubles Card?

Of course, the tennis world is thrilled about the return of the Williams sisters. When Wimbledon posted a “Welcome Back” message to Venus and Serena on Instagram, fans took to the comments section, writing, “OMG it’s happening…everyone stay calm…it’s happening”, “Priceless, absolutely priceless,” and “The best decision to see these legends again at Wimbledon.”
