Fowler Fins YMCA’s James Sorensen has signed to Georgia Tech as a member of the Yellow Jacket men’s 2026 recruiting class.
Sorenson hails from Peachtree Corners, Georgia, and attended Greater Atlanta Christian High School. This past spring, he raced at the YMCA Short Course National Championships, where he surged to a win in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.69. He entered those finals as the 6th-fastest performer from the prelims, with a time of 1:48.36. At that same meet, he finished 4th in the 100 back in 48.46 and was 9th in the 200 IM in 1:50.29, which was one of just two events in which Sorensen swam a career-best time, the other being the 100 free in 46.68.
Sorensen clocked his fastest-ever 100 backstroke at the Bill Behrens Invitational in November in 48.05. Just a month later, at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships, Sorensen blasted a 1:45.46 in the 200 back, which earned him a 19th-place finish in the event. He also holds a 100with fly best time of 48.73 from the YMCA Short Course Nationals during a time trial.

The Georgia Tech men finished 12th out of 15 teams at the 2026 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, scoring 357 points. Only 82 of those points came as a result of individual swimming performances.
Based on Sorensen’s best times, he would have finished 37th in the 100 back, 38th in the 200 back, and 48th in the 100 fly at those ACC Championships.
The Yellow Jacket men did not score a single point in either backstroke event, nor did they in the 100 fly. Though Sorensen does not immediately project to change that number, Georgia Tech addressed a need, and he helps fill that void with solid upside potential.
He has proven he can perform at a high level in big meets, such as the Junior National Championships and the YMCA Nationals. In a competitive conference such as the ACC, that big-meet experience can be a significant advantage for an athlete.
Sorensen joins Kerem Ilyem, Anthony Rulkowski, and fellow Georgia native Christopher Koch in the Yellow Jacket men’s 2026 recruiting class.
