ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Maplewood Community Library on Dewey Avenue reopened on Monday morning after being closed for two years for an $8.5 million renovation project.
The renovations expanded the library by over 2,600 square feet. The library now has a new classroom, meeting spaces, improved restrooms, a new parking lot, a secure outdoor play area for children, and an ADA-accessible entrance facing Dewey Avenue.
The branch closed in May 2024. The library’s services temporarily moved to the former Holy Rosary Church, so residents could remain connected to resources and staff during the construction project. The library serves more than 7,000 people each month and provides English-language classes through its New Americans program. It also hosts educational and entertainment programs for children in the area.
This marks the library’s first major renovation project since it opened in 1959. The funding came from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act, NYSED, city capital improvement dollars, and fundraising for furnishings and other enhancements.
