The England vs New Zealand 2nd Test is set to begin on Wednesday, after a long controversy surrounding the England National Cricket Team, which led to the suspension of their captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson due to an off-the-field incident. Now they have been struck with another setback, Ollie Robinson is set to miss England's second Test.
This will be a big miss for the Three Lions as Ollie Robinson was their best bowler in the first Test at Lord’s. He is suffering from "knee soreness" after a training session on Friday. Ollie Robinson came back into the side for the first time in over two years as he took seven wickets in the first Test.
Henry Crocombe was called into the squad to replace his Sussex partner Robinson for the 2nd Test match. As per ESPNcricinfo, he is not to be risked for the match at The Oval, which begins on Wednesday. He remains in the squad and will be reviewed next week, but England is hopeful of a return to Trent Bridge, with the third Test beginning on June 25.
Previously, Ollie Robinson was banned in 2021 because of historical racist and sexist tweets he posted between 2012 and 2014, when he was 18 to 20 years old. He was banned for eight matches and fined £3,200. However, the pacer has a long history of fitness records with England and was dropped after the 2023-24 tour of India despite a record of 76 wickets at 22.92.
Ollie Robinson's history of injury continues
His last appearance was in Ranchi; however, it was shortened by a back injury sustained while batting that limited him to going wicketless in 13 overs with the ball. However, the pacer will be a big miss for the home side, who will look to seal the series after a dominating 115-run win in the first Test.
Crocombe has featured regularly in recent Lions squads; however, he is yet to make his international debut. He has 21 Division One wickets at 28.61 this season, and he picked 4 for 65 in the Lions' first unofficial Test against South Africa A earlier this month. Though he is on the side, there might not be a chance he gets called into the XI straight away.
Jofra Archer set to lead the pace attack
After the Lord's victory, head coach Brendon McCullum stated, "There is some exciting talent: [Henry] Crocombe, Nav Sharma, Eddie Jack. These guys are all in the system and identified.
"Now, we've just got to make sure we're upskilling them so if the opportunity arises in the years to come, they're ready to step in and perform. It's a good place to be when you have a battery of fast bowlers you can call on."
Jofra Archer will be leading the pace attack as the veteran speedster missed the first game due to workload management after the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Apart from Archer with Josh Tongue, Matt Fisher, and Sonny Baker are three pacers who are in the squad for the second Test match.
England Test squad for 2nd match vs New Zealand: Joe Root (capt), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew, Henry Crocombe, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue
