At least 11 tornadoes blew through Illinois, Indiana on Thursday, NWS says

At least 11 tornadoes touched down in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana during severe storms that rolled across the region on Thursday, the National Weather Service confirmed.

National Weather Service crews have been assessing areas in Illinois and Indiana hit by Thursday’s storms and have already confirmed several tornadoes with levels ranging from EF-0 to EF-3.

    NWS announced crews had confirmed an additional four tornadoes in the area as of 7 p.m. on Saturday, bringing the total to 11.

    A tornado’s Enhanced Fujita Scale rating is based on estimated wind speeds and related damage, according to NWS.

    An EF-0 level tornado has 3 second gust between 65 to 85 mph. An EF-1 level tornado has a 3 second gust between 86 to 110 mph. An EF-2 level tornado has a 3 second gust between 111 and 135, and an EF-3 level between 136 and 165 mph. A 3 second gust between 166 to 200 mph ranks the tornado at EF-4 and above 200 mph ranks the highest at an EF-5.

    Survey crews will be out again Sunday assessing damage, NWS said. They’ll head to Hickory Hills, Justice and Chicago’s Bridgeview neighborhood and then down to south of the Kankakee River near Ford, Iroquois and Newton counties. They may also go to Benton and Jasper counties.

    Many residents in areas hit by the storms woke up Friday to debris and damage and many still do not have power days later. As of Saturday afternoon, nearly 30,000 NIPSCO customers were without power and nearly 35,000 ComEd customers were without power.
