Steven Spielberg has made no secret of his love for aliens over the years – and now he's returned to the subject for his most recent film, Disclosure Day.
The movie – which has just arrived in UK cinemas – comes almost 50 years after he first explored the theme of contact between humans and aliens in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the director has previously explained that he's more convinced now than he was then that alien life exists.
"I am much more inclined now than I was when I made Close Encounters," he explained in the final trailer for the film. "To believe that we're not the only intelligent civilisation in the universe."
With that in mind, you might wonder what kind of conversations were had on set about the likelihood of alien life. And according to star Eve Hewson – who revealed that she'd gone down the rabbit hole of alien theories – she put a pretty direct question to Spielberg about how much he really knew.
View Green Video on the source website"There was like a general behind his back conversation with the crew and us," she explained during an exclusive interview with Radio Times.
"In the makeup trailer we were like, 'Do you think he knows more than like…? He seems to know quite a bit if you read the script."
She continued: "One day when we'd gotten a little bit closer to him, I was like, 'Go on, tell us... like, do you know if they're real? Like, have they visited you?'"
And Spielberg's response?
"He said something so sweet. He was like, 'No, Evie, they, haven't come to visit me. And can you think about that... after all the PR I've done for them!'"
"It's so true," added Hewson's co-star Josh O'Connor. "Go and see Spielberg first!"
O'Connor and Hewson star alongside Emily Blunt, Wyatt Russell, Colman Domingo and Colin Firth in the film, which we awarded three-stars in our review.
The official synopsis for Disclosure Day reads: "As a massive government conspiracy unravels, a targeted whistleblower races against time to bring about the extraordinary event that will change human history forever: the day of ultimate alien disclosure."
Disclosure Day is released in cinemas on Wednesday 10 June 2026.
