Karmelo Anthony Files Notice of Appeal After He Was Found Guilty of Murder

Just two days after Karmelo Anthony was found guilty of fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, he filed a notice of appeal.

Filing a notice of appeal is the first step in challenging the conviction before a higher court. Despite filing for the ruling and his sentence to be reconsidered, it is not guaranteed that Anthony, 19, will be granted a new trial.

Anthony’s attorneys formally filed a notice of appeal on Thursday, June 11, according to Fox 4. The filing preserves his right to ask an appellate court to review potential legal errors that were made during his trial.

The appeal process typically takes a while and it may take months or years to determine if Anthony will get another trial.

A Collin County jury found Anthony guilty of murder on Tuesday, June 9, and he was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

After he was sentenced, Anthony was booked into the Collin County Jail before he was transported to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Wednesday, June 10, according to Fox 4. After he took a new booking photo and the intake process was complete, Anthony was transported to his assigned unit at the Pack Unit near Navasota, Texas.

Anthony was accused of killing Metcalf, 17, during a high school track meet in April 2025. Police said that Anthony, who was 17 at the time, attacked Metcalf after the victim asked him to move from a tent that was designated for his high school’s track team.

One witness told authorities that Anthony then took out a knife from his backpack and said, “Touch me and see what happens.”

Metcalf allegedly tried to physically move Anthony, and Anthony stabbed him in the chest.

Anthony admitted to a responding officer that he did stab Metcalf, but he insisted that it was in self-defense.

During the sentencing hearing, Metcalf’s parents and twin brother addressed Anthony about how painful the killing had been for them during their victim impact statements.

“We were robbed!” Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, told Anthony, according to CBS Texas. Jeff then told Anthony to make eye contact with him as he said, “Don’t look down!”

Jeff continued, “You failed your parents, you failed yourself, and you failed society … You don’t belong in this community. You’re going to prison. I forgave you the day it happened. I don’t forgive what you did. You can’t look me in the eyes but you can stab my f****ing son!”

“You took a son, a brother, a friend, and my best friend, from this world. You took someone from me who was supposed to be an uncle, godfather to my kids,” Hunter Metcalf emotionally said to his brother’s killer. “Now I want everything taken from you.”
