Cubs vs Giants: Series Preview

Cubs vs Giants — Okay. Well, the start of this “easy” stretch has decidedly not gone according to plan. The Cubs dropped two of three to the A’s, Giants, and Rockies, with the offense, until yesterday, looking as anemic as ever. HOWEVER, I did like some of the things we saw in the finale.

Seiya Suzuki hit a grand slam. Alex Bregman hit a homer. Craig Counsell got himself all fired up (and ejected). Phil Maton had a huge strikeout, and the Cubs came through with runners in scoring position several times.

It was still just one win at Coors Field against a bad pitcher, but when all was said and done, it started to feel like more than that to me. Maybe I just want to … believe.

In any case, we’ve got two more series against the same two teams, starting with the Giants in San Francisco. The Cubs will once again face Landen Roupp and Trevor McDonald, both of whom held the Cubs to just one run last weekend. Then, they’re trading in Robbie Ray (last weekend) for Logan Webb (this time), which is definitely not ideal.

Webb is a very good pitcher, and although he spent some time on the IL, he is clearly healed at this point (his last two starts): 15.0 IP, 6H, 1ER, 1BB, 11K.

The Cubs are countering tonight with Javier Assad, who did step up big time against the Giants when Jameson Taillon exited with the trainer (6.1 IP, 1H, 0ER, 1BB, 5K). Then, tomorrow, the Cubs will start Ben Brown, who has been incredible and just held the Giants scoreless over 5.1 innings of work last weekend.

And finally, on Sunday, it’ll be Colin Rea.

Rea had been on a nice little run before the Rockies blew him up in Colorado (4.2 IP, 9H, 7ER, 3BB, 2K). You just never really know what you’re going to get with Rea. Sometimes, he’s pretty great. But more often than occasionally, he gets roughed up.

Matthew Boyd was supposed to start this weekend, but he had a new shoulder injury set him back as he rehabbed from knee surgery.

Offensively, you know the story. Outside of Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch, no one is particularly trustworthy. However, you might be surprised to see the stats for Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki over the last 14 days (I was):

    Happ: .262/.333/.643 (162 wRC+); 3 HRsSuzuki: .279/.326/.512 (134 wRC+); 3 HRs

Happ has actually been mostly fine for a while now, but Suzuki’s slash line is surprising. I would’ve guessed it was much lower than that. Hopefully, he’s finally turning a corner, because the eye test is NOT kind. He looks bad to me. I guess that’s why you check the numbers?

Okay, Cubs. Try not to embarrass yourselves, or us, any further, please. Maybe even try winning your first series in over a month? That’d be cool.
