Three days of Chicago Bears minicamp practices are in the books. And while there are various things I want to touch on from the last three days, the return of a healthy Jaylon Johnson is something I want to do backflips when thinking about what it means for the big picture.
To be clear, the Bears need a healthy Jaylon Johnson for Week 1 of the regular season. So I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. Then again, this isn’t to say it’s not noteworthy that Johnson is healthy right now. It is a big deal that a player who missed 10 regular-season games last year is healthy right now. And when you consider last year’s injury issues, being healthy to end the offseason training program is something we shouldn’t take for granted.
With that being said, I find it encouraging that Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has nothing but good things to say about Jaylon Johnson right now. More from the Tribune’s Brad Biggs:
“I don’t know that I ever saw (Jaylon Johnson be) himself, so it’s hard for me to gauge that, particularly this time of year,” Ben Johnson said before practice Wednesday. “But he had a good day yesterday out there. He’s been able to stack a few of those throughout the OTAs.
“His mind is probably getting more confident in terms of the movements he’s making. He’s a vital part of what we want to do. He’s been a Pro Bowl-caliber player in the past, and hopefully we can get that out of him again.”
The Bears haven’t made Jaylon Johnson available to media this spring, and he didn’t report for the voluntary portion of the offseason program until the start of OTAs.
But since arriving, he looks to be in a better place than he was during last year’s injury-marred season. He said at the end of the season it might take a full offseason for him to get all the way back physically to where he wanted to be.
All of this is so wonderful to read, especially since he starred on Day 1 of minicamp.

Now that the calendar has officially flipped to 2026, we can officially talk about Jaylon Johnson getting a clean slate. Perhaps Johnson can revert to the player he was before an injury-marred 2025 campaign. Because if he can, the Bears’ defense will be in a good position to make the necessary improvements that could make this team a certified Super Bowl contender.
In 2023, Jaylon Johnson was the NFL’s best cornerback. He set career highs in interceptions (4), scored his first defensive touchdown on a pick-six, and earned Pro Football Focus’ highest grade at the position. Johnson earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors. He followed that up with another Pro Bowl nod after a full 17-game season that saw him collect two more interceptions while setting career-highs in total tackles (53) and tackles-for-loss (7) in 2024. That things were lining up for Jaylon to have a big year with a new coach, coordinator, and scheme made it sting even more that injuries didn’t allow him to play to his potential.
We began June with availability being a concern regarding the Bears’ top two corners. And while Kyler Gordon’s soft tissue issues remain a problem, at least Jaylon Johnson is healthy and looking like his old self. Hopefully, this is something we can say about Jaylon when training camp opens in July, preseason games kick off in August, and the regular season begins in September.
