Could Ozzy Trapilo’s return to the Chicago Bears come sooner than expected?
After Bears practice at Halas Hall on Sunday, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer dumped his notebook of observations from Halas Hall over the past week into a column. There were plenty of noteworthy things inside, but one that popped out at me last night was this nugget on Chicago’s left tackle situation, with a heavy emphasis on the last sentence:
“There’s a lot less certainty opposite [Darnell] Wright, where Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills and Kiran Amegadjie are duking it out to start at left tackle. Both Jones and Wills have been healthy, which is a plus. But with Jones out Sunday, Amegadjie took the reps with the starters. And it looks like Ozzy Trapilo, who started six regular-season games at left tackle, then tore his patellar tendon in the wild-card round, might be back sooner than expected.”
Woah!
It’s August, and Breer’s assertion that Ozzy Trapilo could be back sooner than expected leaves room for interpretation, but it’s exciting if it proves true.

Again, without more context, we can’t be sure 1) who Breer got that idea from and 2) how much earlier Trapilo could return to the Bears. But it still deserves mentioning.
There is a whole lot of uncertainty surrounding not only when we’ll see Ozzy Trapilo back on the field for the Bears, but also if he’ll be the same player he was pre-injury. After tearing his patellar tendon in Chicago’s Wild Card victory over Green Bay, the initial timeline ranged from most of 2026 to the entire season.
In April, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson made it sound like he was leaning toward the latter.
“Ozzy’s coming off a pretty serious injury,” he said. “Not sure if we’ll have him next year or at what point he’ll come up. And so we’re going to have an opportunity right now for a lot of competition.”
With Trapilo on the shelf and not really in the plans for 2026, Braxton Jones, free agent signing Jedrick Wills Jr., and Kiran Amegadjie have been competing for the starting left tackle job through the first two weeks of training camp. Although Jones is dealing with an injury right now, he’s been the leader in the clubhouse (externally, anyway) for that job when Week 1 rolls around next month.

One of those three will be the starter in Week 1. Trapilo won’t be in that conversation, and despite some glass-half-full optimism from Breer, we’re still talking about, at the earliest, mid-season before Trapilo returns to the practice field.
By that time, someone like Jones, if the early returns from camp and his health hold up, may have a stranglehold on the job. But even if that’s the case, and that would be a best-case scenario for Chicago, adding quality depth to the mix would be a big boost for the stretch run. When Trapilo was the starter last season and went down against Green Bay in the playoffs, Chicago opted to move Joe Thuney to the outside and start Jordan McFadden at left guard.
When healthy, Trapilo was mostly impressive during his rookie season in Chicago last year. He allowed three sacks over 567 snaps during a six-game stretch after replacing Theo Benedet in Week 12.
It’ll be interesting to see if anyone on the local beat follows up on Breer’s reporting this week.
