No one has contributed more to the subject of UFOs on the big screen than Steven Spielberg – with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET remaining two of the best loved American films ever made.
News that he was returning to the topic for his latest film Disclosure Day was therefore met with great excitement by film fans, in addition to some inevitable theorising about whether this could even be a follow up to one of those earlier efforts.
Those theories intensified in the run up to release, with one rumour – fuelled by a moment from the trailer – suggesting that the film was a secret sequel to Close Encounters.
So now that the film is out, was there any truth to those reports? Read on for everything you know, with the warning that we get into some mild Disclosure Day spoilers below.
Is Disclosure Day connected to Close Encounters of the Third Kind?
The short answer is no. At least, there is no direct narrative connection between the two films.
Spielberg himself has made this much clear, telling Entertainment Weekly that: "It is not a sequel in any way, shape, or form to Close Encounters."
This is true in the sense that the characters, aliens and UFOs that appear in the film are not carried over from the previous film. But, that said, there is a strong argument to be made that the film is a "spiritual sequel" of sorts to that earlier work.
Both of the films are concerned with alien visitations to Earth, both prominently feature secret organisations tasked with keeping the visits under wraps (although in Disclosure Day, this task has been contracted to a private company rather than the government), and both include characters whose behaviours change after interacting with a life form from beyond the planet.

In the earlier film we saw just one visit, but what if it was one of many, over several decades and they were about to be exposed to the public?
This is something that star Emily Blunt referenced in an interview with Empire ahead of release, explaining that "There are definitely questions posed by Close Encounters that are answered in Disclosure Day."
Interestingly Close Encounters isn't the only previously Spielberg film which Disclosure Days includes some references to – with many critics having pointed out similarities with everything from Minority Report to The Post to The Fabelmans.
There's no doubt that it's Close Encounters where the most obvious connection lies, however, even if the story isn't technically a direct follow-up to the events of that film.
Disclosure Day is now showing in UK cinemas.
