Lucille Ball was one of the most beloved television stars of the 1950s and ‘60s, and her gift for physical comedy was unmatched. From stomping on grapes to snatching chocolates from a speeding conveyor belt, I Love Lucy star made her mark in TV history, while her co-stars, Vivian Vance, William Frawley and Ball’s real-life husband, Desi Arnaz, served as willing cohorts.
But in a new interview with the Facts Verse podcast, the I Love Lucy stars’ daughter, Lucie Arnaz, revealed there was a very different dynamic at home.
“My father had a sensational wit,” Arnaz, 75, shared. “He was the funny one. Like if you were talking, he’d be the one that would say things that people would be screaming with laughter.”
“My mother had the ability to take written, something on the page and turn it into absolute gold,” Arnaz continued. “She was basically a clown, you know. She could act it out for you, the whole experience and what that felt like, and it would be bigger than life, you know. But in person, she couldn’t do what my dad did. She didn’t have, you know, too many quips. Her on a Johnny Carson show and my father on a Johnny Carson show are like day and night, you know.”
Lucie Arnaz previously spoke about her parents on The Joan Rivers Show in 1990. At the time, she described her mother as more of a “control freak,” adding that Ball was “not funny off stage.”
She noted that her dad was “a lot funnier” than her mom.
“I mean, as far as doing the physical stuff, she (Lucy) was the queen,” Arnaz said, per Deseret News. “But I get my humor from my dad, not from her – which is odd, but I do. He’s a naturally funny kind of guy. … He never got the acclaim that I think he deserved, because he was the brains behind all that comedy talent.”

Desi Arnaz always credited Ball for the success of I Love Lucy.
Shortly before his death in 1986, he penned a letter to be read at Ball’s Kennedy Center Honors. The letter, read by Robert Stack, said:
“I Love Lucy had just one mission: to make people laugh. Lucy gave it a rare quality. She can perform the wildest, even the messiest, physical comedy without losing her feminine appeal. The New York Times asked me to divide the credit for its success between the writers, the directors and the cast. I told them, ‘Give Lucy 90% of the credit and divide the other 10% among the rest of us.’ Lucy was the show. Viv, Fred and I were just props, damn good props, but props nevertheless. P.S. I Love Lucy was never just a title.”
