Machine Gun Kelly Describes Terrifying Health Scare From Tattoo Procedure: I Stopped Being Able to Move Parts of My Body

Machine Gun Kelly has always been known for his unique sense of style, be it eye-catching jewelry, vibrant outfits or unique tattoos.

Yet even then, the 36-year-old singer can sometimes blur the line between art and fashion and genuine health risks, as happened to be the case for MGK's harrowing blackout tattoo transformation.

In a recent interview with Billboard Canada, the world-famous rapper discussed how his painful blackout tattoo eventually triggered some serious health issues, including yellowed skin and difficulty moving some parts of his body.

“After the first week, we hit my lymph nodes around my armpits and shoulders, and I got really sick," MGK said. "My skin was turning yellow. I wasn't able to sleep. I stopped being able to move certain parts of my upper body."

In spite of the severe medical issues he suffered from the procedure, Machine Gun Kelly said that he exited the transformation "extremely inspired."

“Not just because of what I had done, but because of what I had to overcome," the musician explained.

As those familiar with tattoo terminology might know, a blackout tattoo is an extensive procedure that involves saturating large sections of one's skin with solid black ink.

As MGK mentioned, most tattoo artists recommend that the procedure took about two years to complete, avoiding any health risks that might about from the tattoo's application. Rather than wait two years, however, MGK decided to undergo the process in a "near impossible" two months.

“I was looking for a change that wasn't just a sound wave,” MGK said of the reasoning behind his tattoo procedure. “It had to be something physical."

Above all else, MGK said he wanted to achieve a more lasting consistency in his physical appearance, rather than continuing to live on with the various conflicting tattoos he had all over his body.

"I saw death and drugs in all these patterns that I was literally writing on my body,” the singer said. “There were happy tattoos, sad tattoos, holy tattoos, hellish tattoos. It was like my bipolarity was screaming off my skin.”
