Before You Pack a NeeDoh in Your Carry-On, Read This

It turns out that if you want to bring a NeeDoh on board a plane this travel season, chances are it won't make it past TSA unless it's in a checked bag.

NeeDoh is currently one of the most viral sensory toys, popular in part due to the TikTok craze. And it has found new life after being intended as a go-to stimming and fidget-friendly product. Grown-ups and younger generations alike are seeking out the squish sensation. Now, seen as the hottest gift for fidget toy collectors and kids, they’re often sold out at popular retailers such as Target, Amazon, and Walmart, with resellers often marking up the in-demand Needoh for upwards of 40 dollars.

So you can imagine the headaches it causes when it gets flagged and found in carry-ons at TSA, which we've witnessed delaying consumers on our travels. Despite being a popular toy, it's also a liquid, a fact many who have had to go through quite an ordeal to acquire a NeeDoh in the first place are learning the hard way that more often than not, it cannot be brought into the cabin.

TSA has rules for NeeDoh and liquid-filled toys.

The official TSA Facebook page shared this statement regarding the popular toy, “Knead your NeeDoh on the plane? It’s a peace o’ cake if they’re 3.4 oz or less.” It read, referring to the 3-1-1 regulations. ”If an item contains materials you can pump, squeeze, spread, smear, spray, or spill, they need to follow our carry-on liquids rule.”

Clearly, it might be tough for folks who need to use it for stimming on the plane or to keep their kids busy. Paul Weingard, the CEO of Schylling, the company that makes NeeDoh, recently told Parade about the demand for the sensory toy. “They have a remarkable amount of therapeutic uses, even though we don’t prescribe them for those uses. I’m just amazed at the broad range of ways that NeeDoh fans are using the product.”

If you simply must bring one on the plane, many squish toy enthusiasts have had better luck with the NeeDoh Nice Ice Baby—it's the mini cube version—for their carry-ons. It's at your own risk, as the NeeDoh liquid ounces are not officially labeled anywhere in their product descriptions (Parade has requested this information from Schylling). Because of that, the gel inside might still get your NeeDoh flagged by TSA if it's going to be swabbed.

Ultimately, it’s best to put any number of NeeDoh toys in a checked bag if you’re heading on vacation or traveling with them as gifts. It's not worth the risk of tossing whatever you spent on a NeeDoh in the garbage can at the airport.
