It's time for the gang to get back together, as Patrick Renna announced he and some of the original cast of The Sandlotwill star in a new series. While die-hard fans will be excited to see the actors they met as kids all grown up, the project isn't a direct sequel.
Renna, who played the role of Hamilton "Ham" Porter, posted the news on his Instagram with a screenshot of the Deadline article. He captioned the post, "The gang’s back together again." Original star Marty York, who starred as Alan "Yeah-Yeah" McClennan, also rejoiced in the news.
According to Deadline, the new comedy series will be led by Renna and Kyle Howard and produced through their production company, Hambino Media. It will be the first official reunion with the main cast since the beloved coming-of-age film that was released in 1993.
The Sandlot fans will get to see the beloved actors again, but not in their original movie roles. Dugout Dads will instead follow an idealistic dad, played by Renna, who starts coaching his son's Little League team. He soon learns the real temper tantrums and drama aren't the players, but the parents, coaches, and even himself.
"Throughout the season, Coach Patrick finds himself constantly at odds with his own advice to the kids: baseball is supposed to be FUN," reads the plotline.
View this post on InstagramAlongside Renna, Dugout Dads will also star Tom Guiry, Chauncey Leopardi, York, Brandon Quintin Adams, Victor DiMattia, Shane Obedzinski, Grant Gelt, and Will Horneff. To add more nostalgic fun to the mix, Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel will also star in the series as Renna's on-screen wife.
“After years of coaching Little League, I’ve witnessed some truly epic meltdowns on the field, and it’s always the adults (I’d be lying if I said it was never me). I just knew those experiences had to become a show. What makes it even more special is that it’s bringing me back together with the cast of The Sandlot, guys I’ve shared a unique bond and brotherhood with for more than 30 years. It feels like a story I was meant to tell, with exactly the right people to tell it with,” Renna said.
The comedy series is expected to release later this year, with Friends' Sebastian Jones and Malcom in the Middle's Dan Kopelman serving as its writers. Victor Neill Jr. is set to direct alongside Renna and Howard.
