Manav Suthar made history in his first-ever Test match for Team India, taking 6 wickets in the first innings for only 33 runs, and one other scalp in the second innings of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh.
Suthar’s stand-out performance casts concerns on some of the other spinners in India’s Test team, including Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja was rested for the match.
India’s next Test match will be against Sri Lanka in August this year. Will the team management keep trusting in the emerging spinner during the tour, or will he be on the bench to allow the experienced spinners to take the field against Sri Lanka?
Former Team India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin faced the critical questions during the online interaction with ESPNCricinfo. Ashwin has strong beliefs that the Indian team management will continue with Manav Suthar after the stand-out performance he has shown against Afghanistan.
What will be the future of Ravindra Jadeja if Manav Suthar plays?
Ashwin says that the management is looking for a match-winning spinner, and Manav Suthar has all the tools to fulfill the requirements. So he thinks that the 23-year-old will start against Sri Lanka, and if Ravindra Jadeja joins the line-up, then he can contribute as the batting all-rounder.
“I think it's evident that the management is looking for an out-and-out, match-winning spinner. Which will probably confine Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) into a batting all-rounder who will give a bit of experience with the ball. This augurs well for the Indian team. I would think Manav Sutar will start in Sri Lanka purely by the performance that he has dealt out,” R Ashwin says.
Ashwin expresses concerns over Kuldeep Yadav
R Aswhin’s concerns are over Kuldeep Yadav. In the first innings of the one-off Test, the experienced spinner was not able to justify his talent. But in the second innings, he snapped three wickets. The former cricketer credits the captain, Shubman Gill, for utilizing Kuldeep well according to the situation.
“It will be interesting to see how much Kuldeep will be backed going forward. I do think it's a very interesting time for Kuldeep. I loved how Shubman used Kuldeep in the second inning to try to give him a bit of confidence. I think that variety is needed. If you have so many spin bowling all-rounders, Kuldeep can continue to be backed. It will be interesting to watch,” he added.
Washington Sundar is another spin bowling all-rounder who was in the line-up against Afghanistan for the Test match. Sundar took four wickets in the second innings, alongside the one he picked up in the first. If Suthar, Jadeja, and Yadav join the playing eleven, then what will be Sundar’s role?
“I do believe Jadeja will come back. Washington will hold on to his place. Manav Sutar will be that specialist spinner who will bowl those many overs to try and pick wickets. Kuldeep will add a bit of variety, and this combination will go through to the first test,” Ravichandran Ashwin opines.
