The ODI series against Afghanistan will be a part of India’s preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027. The ODI format is the one where Gautam Gambhir is yet to prove his authority, unlike the T20I format, where he has left his mark permanently.
There are some visible differences in the Indian cricket team dressing rooms across the formats. For the T20Is, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Chief selector Ajit Agarkar selected a team mostly featuring young talent. The recent snub of the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav was a strong message by the team management. In the ODIs, the scenario is different.
Unlike the T20Is or even the Tests, the ODI team contains some of the superstars of the nation, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya. After winning the T20 World Cup, Gautam Gambhir made it clear that in his presence, there will be no superstar culture in the dressing room. If he applies the same method for the 50-overs format, then what will be the future of Rohit, Virat, and Hardik?
According to a Times of India (TOI) report, some of the senior players are in constant touch with the top BCCI officials to get some clarity about their role in the team, in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Sources told TOI that the team management and some of the senior players need to be brought on the same page. It has also been learnt that a few senior players have been in constant touch with the power forces in BCCI to get clarity about the plans going into 2027,” according to the report.
Captain Shubman Gill will have to clear his stance as well
The matter is not only between Gautam Gambhir and the senior cricketers. ODI captain Shubman Gill will have to take his stance as well. As the leader of the team, he will have to say his words firmly, regardless of whether there are big names in the squad.
As the players are looking for clarity, communication is the best option to go with. A BCCI source mentions that as the focus has been shifting towards the upcoming 50-overs World Cup, Gautam Gambhir and Gill are both expected to be involved in the planning.
Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room: BCCI source
“With such big players in the team, Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room. Gambhir hasn’t got involved in the planning as intently as he has in the other two formats. So far, he has let things take their course,” the BCCI source told the media house.
“Now that the focus has shifted to the preparation for the ODI World Cup, one may expect Gambhir and Gill to take charge and firmly communicate their ideas in the dressing room. It’s important that the senior players, who have served India with distinction for so many years, are informed of what role the team expects them to play and the plan for the buildup over the next 16 months,” the source added.
