CUBS LINEUP — It doesn’t seem to matter whom the Cubs are facing these days; everyone is a challenge. Will that be different for the 24-32 Colorado Rockies? I guess we’ll find out tonight.
Here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup with Colin Rea on the mound against Tomoyuki Sugano and the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crwo-Armstrong, CF Moises Ballesteros, DH Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Nico Hoerner, 2B Miguel Amaya, C Dansby Swanson, SSSugano has struggled against lefties throughout his career, but the gap is even wider this season than usual …

… which is probably why Craig Counsell has stacked the top of the Cubs lineup with lefties – PCA, Moises Ballesteros, and Michael Busch. The first and third batters there have been hot lately, and the middle guy, our lovable rookie DH, is perhaps a key to the Cubs success the rest of the season. Here’s hoping he can turn a new leaf tonight in a hitter friendly park against a pitcher who struggles against lefties.
But beyond that, there aren’t really any notable changes. Bregman is still in the top-half followed by Happ, Suzuki, and Hoerner. Amaya is catching and batting eighth, and Swanson turns it over.
Perhaps tomorrow, Matt Shaw will start to work in and give some of those (non Busch) infielders their needed days off.
Rockies Lineup:
Jake McCarthy, LF Willi Castro, 2B TJ Rumfield, 1B Hunter Goodman, C Troy Johnston, RF Ezequiel Tovar, SS Cole Carrigg, CF Kyle Karros, 3B Edouard Julien, DHPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP
Colin Rea hit a bit of a speed bump 4-5 starts ago, but has responded with three really nice outings in a row against the Astros, Pirates, and Athletics (combined): 17.2 IP, 7ER (3.57 ERA). However, he has been walking a few too many batters and the strikeout rate is quite low.
The lack of runs, then, can more accurately be attributed to some fortunate sequencing, as his 83%+ strand rate over the last three games is almost certainly unsustainable. And while the Rockies are not a particularly fearsome lineup against righties overall (90 wRC+), they are a lot better against them at Coors Field (106 wRC+). It’s just never easy for pitchers to go there and succeed.
Colorado Rockies: Tomoyuki Sugano, RHP
Sugano may have nice results this year (3.98 ERA over 12 games), but the peripherals are painting a MUCH more dire image of his actual performance:
7.52 xERA 5.18 FIP 13.6 K%, 6.8 BB% 91.0 MPH EV 16.3% barrel rate (!)Simply put, this is an EXTREMELY hittable pitcher, who also happens to be worse at home and against lefties, both of which he’ll have to deal with tonight. There really is no reason for the Cubs lineup not to score a ton of runs.
