The Mexican government announced that the city of Cancún will host the first stop of the “2027” Open Water World Cup.
Cancún is a popular tourist destination along Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo. Known for its clear blue beaches, resorts, and proximity to the Wonder of the World Chichen Itza, the city reported a record 21 million tourists in 2023 from all over the Americas and beyond.
Despite being labelled the 2027 Open Water World Cup, action in Cancún will take place November 6-7, 2026. This is because World Aquatics is moving up the 2027 and 2028 Open Water World Cups. The organization hopes to curb scheduling conflicts with the 2027 World Championships and 2028 Olympics. You can read more on World Aquatics’ decision to do this here.
This will mark the first time Mexico has hosted an Open Water World Cup, or one of its predecessor events under FINA, since 2015. In that year, fellow Quintana Roo city Cozumel held FINA open water events. It also marks the first time in five years that the event will have a stop in the western hemisphere. The last time was 2022, when the FINA Marathon Swim Series scheduled stops in Canada and Puerto Rico.
Mexico hosting now comes in apt timing, given that the nation just won its first medal in open water swimming earlier this year. This happened courtesy of Paulo Strehlke, who reaped silver in the 3k shootout sprint at the final stop of the 2026 World Cup in Italy. Strehlke will have a shot to medal in home waters in the same event as well as the 10k. No relays will be contested in Cancún.
At the date of publication, eight countries had committed to sending athletes: Mexico, the United States, Australia, Italy, Germany, Ecuador, Portugal, and Switzerland. World Aquatics has not yet publicized the full 2027 stop schedule.
